Jesus Christ, what a tonal shift. Your head explodes the second the film starts.
The intro is shot in a way my limited vocabulary can’t quite explain. It's blue, icy, and fresh like a sunrise on the beach. You feel the weight of something heavier than anything that came before. John Barry’s instrumental theme is so mesmerizing you don’t want it to end. I think the fact that this is only an instrumental opening may suggested that we are entering the next chapter. If not for all the lead-actor chaos that followed, I sometimes wonder if they would’ve kept this kind of opening after every switch.
Ok... What else hits you when you’re high
First of all - our boy, Lazenby. In the wordless moments he’s really magnetic. Pure charisma leaking off the screen. The problem is when he opens his mouth and tries to deliver dialogue. Almost every line lands like wet wood. You can feel raw talent slamming against zero experience. I’m convinced that by his third picture that log would’ve been carved into real sculputre. What a brutal shame we never got to see it. (Don’t worry, Roger’s praise is coming.)
Second - The story moves clean and sharp. Even properly baked you can follow every thread and trust me, that’s not always the case in this franchise. The atmosphere is thick enough to chew. You feel the cold in your bones. The sixties of early Beatles perfeclty captured in YOLT is gone. Now we’re deep in the hippie haze, with LSD trails flickering at the edges of the frame. Weed fits this movie like a glove. That hypnosis sequence will stay with you long after the credits roll.
What hurts the film is its own indecision. It can’t decide whether it wants to be a fun, sun-soaked adventure like its predecessor or something darker and more serious. So it ricochets between tones: one minute you’re inside a paranoid thriller watching Bond escape through a snowy Christmas market, the next you’re in a joyful, almost goofy chase on skis or in fast cars. The whiplash is constant.
Still, this is a special picture. The first real attempt to break the formula and that fact that it’s happening this early in the series is almost unbelievable. I'm shocked they let Peter Hunt do this, and it's sad that they got scared by the reception.
Also - another thing that bothered me while watching was the final scene. The legendary finale of the movie. It is so well done with this mini moment between Bond and Moneypenny and later with the death. Trust me, it will rip the heart right out of your chest. I was doing everything I could, to not cry like a baby. But then, instead of letting the silence or Louis Armstrong’s voice carry out the wave of melancholy, they smash you over the head with the main theme like some tone-deaf asshole. George gave everything in that scene, only for the credits music to kill the entire effect. What a dumb, unforgivable choice.
