Luffy v Big Mom isn't just two pirates duking it out, it's the two polar opposite political extremes, gifted to us by a Japanese madman who also happens to be a genius. Respect Big Mom, for she is real and she does indeed yearn to protect you by devouring you. #OPBM
Like Luffy, Big Mom is another "not-a-person." She represents much more than that. If Luffy = Freedom and Linlin = Totalitarian Nanny States, then yeah.... I'd say she's a pretty fuggin jaw-droppingly amazing antagonist. Oda had on his Orwell hat when he devised Big Mom. #OPBM
They huddle close to her for security and suckle at the teet of her bounty, while she suckles at their life force in a perverse reversal of the mother-child dynamic.
Big Mom's overbearing Matriarchy thus also function as a metaphor for real world totalitarian states. #OPBM
The problem is perhaps even sicker when it comes to Mom's "adopted children"--the citizens of Tottoland, because Mommy has promised them security from outside dangers in exchange for their souls. #OPBM
--or even discussing with BM how to prevent it? Nope, they just scramble to appease her like villagers worshipping King Kong. She may as well be a god to them, who requires constant sacrifices--in the form of food, in the form of freedom, in the form of literal life-force. #OPBM
It's unlikely that all those kids grew up wanting to be pirates. Lola's got a death sentence just for seeking her own path in life! Sometimes Mom goes on a rampage and destroys her own country. Even when she's not around, do the kids ever talk about ending this madness-- #OPBM
All but a few Charlotte kids are loyal to their powerful mother (because she'd kill them if they weren't), they're completely chained to their mother as far as life goals (because she'd kill them if they weren't), and they're completely terrified of their mother(ditto). #OPBM
Also think of the classic over-protective mother. What happens to kids when their mom does everything for them? What happens when Mom never lets her kids do the natural thing by growing up and leaving home? Well, that's how you get a highly disfunctional group of kids. #OPBM
When women are in charge, a Matriarchy, a dark side is also possible, and it comes in its own form. If the dark side of the Masculine is characterized by not enough empathy, then the dark side of the Feminine can be characterized as too much empathy:

Patriarchy has a well-known dark side: traditional masculine power structures characterized primarily by a lack of empathy (such as ignoring society's disadvantaged, failing to account for alternate views, reckless free-for-alls on resources, etc). #OPBM
The people of Totto Land don't worry about outside attacks because everyone knows Mom's there to protect them.
Nobody who read WCI failed to see all of the above. But what some people missed is the dark side of Motherhood inherent in Big Mom's character.#OPBM
Likewise, her ambitions seem to come from a place of caring: she wants to be Pirate King(Queen, whatever) so she can unite all the races and end inequality. Also like a Mom, she's the ultimate force that keeps her children safe. #OPBM
She's a quintessential Mom in many ways. First literally: she has more kids than any woman in human history. She's also a kind of adoptive mother to the people of Totto Land. Unlike other OP villains, her citizens seem be mostly satisfied under her rule. #OPBM
