On 23 July 1988, Bravo and Delta Companies of 16 SIKH On 23 July 1988, Bravo and Delta Companies of 16 SIKH were tasked to search an area in Sri Lanka.
At about 1030 hours, 11 Platoon came under heavy fire of militants. At the same time, Delta Company started closing in from the East. They also came under heavy fire. Delta company decided to launch an attack.
One General Purpose Machine Gun was taking heavy toll of the assaulting troops. L/Nk Singh, Light Machine Gun number 1, fired at the bunker from the hip position. He realised that his fire had little impact on small loopholes.

Long gone, but not forgotten
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 Major Surinder Singh, Vir Chakra (P), 16 RAJ RIF, made the supreme sacrifice, chasing and neutralising militants in Sri Lanka, as part of #IPKF #OpPawan, #OnThisDay 05 June in 1989.
Maj Singh was tasked to approach a suspected militant hideout in an area east of Puttar in Sri Lanka. He located and identified the hideout. Thereafter, he decided to raid it.
On 5 June 1989, Maj Singh organised his patrol of 15 men and went on the raid, during which he shot two militants.
The patrol observed two militants fleeing the hut. The officer, without worrying about his safety, decided to chase the fleeing militants. In the hut were the two militants earlier shot by him.
As he ran past the hut, one militant opened fire at point-blank range on Maj Singh and injured him seriously. Despite the injury to his chest, the Brave turned round, shot dead the injured militant, and continued chasing the militants till he collapsed.
He refused to be attended to and directed his personnel to pursue the militants. Eventually, one of the fleeing militants was shot dead. Soon after the operation, the officer was evacuated to a field hospital, where he was declared dead.
Maj Singh was conferred with a posthumous Vir Chakra.

Nk Singh and his platoon commander were hit and injured. Disregarding his injury on his chest, Nk Singh continued to crawl forward to close on and locate the militants, who had holed up in the bush. However, Nk Singh succumbed to his injuries while he was being evacuated.

The party came under intense fire from the militants.
He jumped out of his vehicle and despite the intense militant fire, organized his party and returned the fire. He personally shot dead one militant and wounded another. It was at this stage of the encounter that Lt Col Sekhon was hit by a militant’s bullet through the chest and he fell on the spot.

Nk Singh laid down his life during a search and destroy mission of an LTTE hideout #OnThisDay 08 April in 1989 in Sri Lanka as part of the #IPKF during #OpPawan
Based on information from a captured hardcore militant, a raid was launched to eliminate a group of 10 armed militants. Naik Singh was a member of the specially selected raid team. When the raid group reached a house, it came under intense automatic fire. The fire was immediately returned.
When it was realised that the militants were trying to flee to the north, the group was divided into two sub-teams. Naik Singh noticed two militants bringing down effective fire on the number one sub-team, thereby, slowing their advance. Seeing that time was running out and that the militants were getting away. He charged from behind the cover and, while on the move, fired and killed one militant. After killing the militant, he chased and wounded another militant who, however, managed to escape.
As Naik Singh dashed beyond the cover, he received a bullet in the chest from a third militant and was severely injured. He was evacuated to Kayts Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury.
Naik Ranjeet Singh displayed boldness, exemplary courage, and initiative in action against the militants and was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously.

L/Nk Singh was performing the duties of Light Machine Gun Number 1 with Number 14 Platoon of Echo company 4 Garhwal Rifles. The company had been tasked to advance, contact and reduce a militant camp in the Nayaroo lagoon area of Northern Vavuniya sector of Sri Lanka.
On the 22 March 1989 the leading platoon of the company contacted the militants. A fierce exchange of fire ensued resulting in casualties in the platoon.
It was at this time that number 14 Platoon to which L/Nk Singh belonged, was tasked to move towards the southern flank. L/Nk Singh was ordered to move his detachment to a point 30 meters away and engage the militants so that the rest of the platoon can move back to a safe area.
In the dash to the indicated point under heavy fire L/Nk Singh was separated from number 2 of his detachment thus, reached there alone. Unmindful of the fact that he was alone, he immediately engaged the militants with sustained and accurate fire. Due to his fire, the platoon commander regained balance and redeployed his platoon some 30 meters behind the area where contact had been made.
However, his position came under heavy automatic fire and an RPF rocket burst above injuring him on the shoulders.
Though isolated and under great stress and pain, the #IndianBrave continued firing accurately. By the time the platoon Havildar returned to rescue L/Nk Singh, the latter was hit by a burst of militant fire and he fell on the spot.
