Known as “Albania’s Grand Canyon,” its dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters beckon adventurers to explore its ancient secrets. Formation Story Osum Canyon, or Kanioni i Osumit, was sculpted 2-3 million years ago by the relentless erosion of the Osum River. Initially flowing underground the river gradually wore away the overlying rock, exposing a spectacular gorge. This process, driven by water and time transformed the landscape into a 26-km-long canyon, with steep limestone walls and intricate rock formations. Seasonal snowmelt and rainfall further shaped the canyon, creating waterfalls and caves that define its rugged beauty. Geological Information Located near Çorovodë in the Skrapar region, Osum Canyon stretches 26 km and reaches depths of up to 80 meters, with widths varying from 1.5 meters at the riverbed to 35 meters higher up. The canyon’s vertical limestone walls, formed from ancient marine sediments, rise to 450 meters at their highest point. Water erosion has crafted unique features, including pockmarked cavern walls, underground passages, and small caves, many of which remain unexplored. Notable rock formations named by locals as the Cathedral, the Eye, and Demon’s Door, reflect the erosive artistry of the Osum River. The canyon’s six narrow sections and rare “rock chain” formations are among Albania’s most distinctive geological features. Its ecosystem rich with Mediterranean shrubs like heath and briar, supports year-round greenery, thriving despite the arid conditions. The surrounding area lies between Tomorri Mountain and Fir of Hotova-Dangëlli National Parks, adding to its geological significance. ▶️ Interesting Fact Local legend tells of Osumi, a woman loved by two brothers, Tomorr and Shpirag, whose tragic conflict over her led to their deaths. Osumi’s tears are said to have formed the Osum River, with the canyon lying between the mountains named after the brothers, weaving a poignant cultural narrative into the landscape.
