Gwendolyn Trice talked about his father’s story as a logger in Eastern Oregon. There was a migration of diverse people of color and white people to work in logging. Then when the work ended those people needed to leave due to the Exclusion Laws. But her father stayed #OSUPH 2

This week at Public History class we were honored to receive the presence of Gwendolyn Trice and Carl Wilmsen. It was amazing to learn about the @LoggerDaughter projects and the history of the museum. #OSUPH 1

An example of this would be historic preservation which calls for training in the natural sciences, along with history. As a graduate student of history, it is nice to know that teaching is not the only avenue I can take for a career, even though that is the goal. #osuph 5/5

the public. He also researches historical contexts of regions to better inform foreign policy makers, which I found interesting. Lastly, we read an article that highlighted qualifications for jobs that require a background in history, coupled with other disciplines. #osuph 4/5

Our readings went over what employers are looking for in candidates. They stressed the importance of making connections, building your resume, the indispensability of internships, looking at qualifications for jobs ahead of time, and the amount of experience employers #osuph 2/5

This week’s readings were a wake up call for me. I don’t have any experience within my field so I am currently working on my cv, resume, and writing cover letters for multiple opportunities that will eventually help me find a job in academia. #osuph 1/5

But agriculture rejoice in the fact that the braceros would enter the country temporarily as cheap laborers and then be ordered back to Mexico. As a result, Mexican Americans are the largest minority in the Pacific Northwest. #OSUPH

This week’s #OSUPH theme was about monuments and rewriting history. I especially enjoyed “Don’t worry about ‘rewriting history’: it’s literally what we historians do,” an article by Charlotte Lydia Riley about reevaluating history as monuments are removed. /1

Museums have a duty to collaborate with members of the community who are sensitive to these items in order to decide whether or not they should be displayed, and how they can be presented. #OSUPH /4

Our #OSUPH class discussed museums in public history this week, focusing on the ways that museums should (or should not) collect and display certain items, and how they can collaborate to create a truly representative and respectful space. /1

I am really glad we arrive at this point in the course to talk about decolonization and decolonial practices inside the History field. It is a topic that I care about, include, and emphasize as one of my values. #OSUPH 4

collaborate with the communities whose history they seek to display. Museums have to critically question what is being included and excluded in their exhibits. They must do more to contextualize stolen artifacts and pieces. #osuph 4/4

Inclusive spaces now use museums as building blocks of social healing. This notion is vital because the general public trusts these institutions which creates a power dynamic. These spaces must use this power and trust to make equitable exhibits. #osuph 2/4

I find Lonetree’s work essential for the formation of future historians and curators since they will be in direct contact w/ valuable artifacts, objects, and documents that are part of the history of many communities. Sensitivity and empathy need to be developed. #OSUPH 2

Amy Lonetree, in her book “Decolonizing Museums”, addresses the importance of Decolonizing practices such as assisting communities with historical unresolved grief, avoiding using passive voice in their writings as a way to hide information or dismiss the perpetrators. #OSUPH 1

@SharonSaMart I love this Sharon! It’s such a great question. I wonder with growing levels of digitization and digital history will some sources get lost? As the internet continues to be capitalized upon, who will decide what we preserve? #OSUPH

My question is that if we trust digital versions, will our collective memory be easily manipulated? Without any physical evidence that can help us build our past? Will the internet magnates get even more powerful with that information? #OSUPH

As William Thomas states in his article, in the near future most of the historic primary and secondary sources will be digitalized. This will make a shift in the historiographic method. An immediate access to valuable documents and how that information is used. #OSUPH 2

Digital history is a newly developed method that adjusts to the technology era. It is an interactive way with which historians can generate knowledge. D.H. scholarship opens the question up for readers to investigate and form interpretive associations of their own. #OSUPH 1
