Everyone has their own story to tell on this day. Where I was working in the office on September 11, it was a relatively cool early autumn day, gloomy and cloudy. Not that there was anything to indicate that there would be Evil in the air – it was just a gloomy day in September. In the early afternoon of our time there was not too much to do, so everyone was already preparing for an earlier end of work and I checked the mail again - when a strange message came on the entrance platform of the mail service about a plane that had crashed into a tower of the World Trade Center in New York. No further details were known, I first thought of a spectacular accident and did not even have a potential catastrophe of this magnitude in mind. A little later I drove home from the office and it was very noticeable that the streets were extraordinarily deserted for this time of day. Even the neighbor who met me in the stairwell with his dog noticed this. Television was to answer all open questions a little later. The first horrific images came on all channels, shots of people jumping to their deaths from the top floors, later the interviews with women and daughters who told how their fathers had called them again from the planes to tell them for the last time that they loved them. And again and again the uncertainty and the question of whether this would not be the prelude to a new world war... 24 years have passed since then. There is no more muffled music on the radios. On Ground Zero, a tremendous tower rose again, the One World Trade Center, called the Freedom Tower until 2009, larger and mightier than ever before. Downtown Manhattan has returned to normality, life goes on as usual. The killing of the alleged mastermind behind the attacks, Osama bin Laden, and the weakening of the terrorist network Al-Qaeda have contributed to the satisfaction of many Americans, as has the fact that there has not been a major terrorist attack on their own soil since 2001 – and it had failed to destabilize the country. We also know now that there has not been and will not be a new world war. The attacks of September 11 had prompted then-US President George W. Bush, who had won the election in 2000 with the announcement that he would be less involved abroad and who had adhered to this until that day, to make a political U-turn. From that day on, they wanted to take the war to the terrorists before they would manage to carry it to the United States. Thus, on the basis of the NATO statute, Afghanistan was attacked, which had become a quiet hinterland for terrorist groups that had violence against the United States in mind. Two years later, the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was overthrown, who had nothing to do with al-Qaeda but was considered a persistent security risk by the United States. There has been some progress in both countries for a while, but at the end of the day the interventions failed to create lasting pro-western and democratic polities. From today's perspective, we know a lot better. But it is easy to judge people who had to make decisions of global impact in a given situation with the knowledge given to them at the time. But perhaps the most comforting aspect is the fact that the apocalypticists and agitators were not right. The majority of people in the U.S., as well as in the Islamic world, are not interested in any "clash of civilizations."
