HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECT COMBINATION in A level? What informed it? Was it grades at O level? Advice/pressure from friends, parents, family? Passion or ability? *Buying these maths textbooks for my daughter reminded me of my A level journey at Kigezi High School, which I started with PCB+Submaths, then MEG and concluded with DEG/Fine Art. A level is a complex stage in one's academic journey where getting it right from the start is very important. It is a two years' period, but it is actually less than that. The choice of combination is a catch 22, especially when you excel at both sciences and arts in O level. For me, after getting good grades in Arts and Sciences in O level, I felt that I had to carry the hopes of my village to produce, in me, the first Medical Doctor. While being a doctor was and remains a noble mission, my passion lay elsewhere--in story telling, writing and mobilisation. So, in first and second term, I did Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and the compulsory Submaths. While I loved these subjects, they did not seem to like me back in equal measure. While I used to score above 80 percent in O level, I was struggling in 60s and 50s. I quickly knew I was in the wrong place and asked for change of combination. But the school could not allow me to move straight from Sciences to Arts. The only middle ground was to either do PEM or MEG--Physics Economics and Math or Maths Econ and Geography. I chose MEG. After one term doing MEG, I realized that I was destined to no where, for I could see myself excelling in Economics and Geography and struggling with Maths. In first term in senior six, I dropped maths and replaced it with Divinity, and added on Fine Art as a fourth Principle, and the standard General Paper. With this change of combination, I felt I was home. Every time teachers came in class, I could feel both the passion, interest and ability all rolled into one. And when we sat for A level UACE final exams in 1996, I scored 21 points and got admitted to study Mass Communication ( With Political Science and Economics) @Makerere University on @GovUganda scholarship. I don't regret attending those PCB and Math classes, for there is no side effect of knowing about different subjects. I can follow discussions and contribute when they are talking about differentiation and integration, relative velocity, trajectories and the like, but I think if I had had sufficient career guidance early in my education, I would have focused more from the start. But also, mathematics, forexample ,is a universal subject whose application is found in all aspects of life, career and work. I wonder whether it may not be a good idea to have a multidisciplinary approach to our education and learning where it should be possible to have crossing cutting subject combinations at A level. A good business journalist needs some solid understanding and grounding in maths, finance and economics. A good court reporter may benefit from understanding the law. A good technology journalist should have knowledge in that field, and compliment it with good writing skills. The challenges we face which require solutions are multidisciplinary, transdisciplinary and cross disciplinary in nature. Anyway, as it stands, and until then, our children need to know early on what their career prospects are and not spend time hoping from one combination to another --because they have no luxury of time.

It's a cloudy day in Parker and we're expecting some rain this afternoon too. It'll keep the dust down and potentially slow things a tad farther back in the lineup. Now: 69 degrees #parker425 #p425 #parkeraz
