#Bigcats, key to healthy ecosystems, face growing threats.
🔸 #Tigers: Once ranging across vast parts of Asia, wild tiger numbers have declined by over 95%. Today, around 5,500 remain.
🔸 #PersianLeopard: Having lost over 72-84% of its historical range, its largest population survives in Iran (528–732 individuals), followed by Turkmenistan (60–80).
🔸 #AmurLeopard: As per the 2024 estimate by IUCN, only 150 are left in the wild. This leopard is native to the forests in the southwest of Primorsky Krai (near the borders of Russia, China and North Korea) and is among the rarest big cats on Earth.
🔸 #AsiaticLions: Confined to Gujarat’s Gir Forest, they’ve made a gradual comeback, with 674 as estimated in 2020. But global lion populations continue to decline, with an estimated 23,000 remaining.
🔸 #JavanLeopard: The last big predator on Indonesia’s Java island, this elusive cat now numbers around 391 adults in the wild (2021 Red List IUCN assessment report).
At #IBCA, we remain committed to supporting science-based approaches that protect these species and the ecosystems they depend on.
📖 Read more about these species in #BigCatsMagazine, where we've covered their stories in depth.

The #Persianleopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) is a majestic subspecies found across Iran, Turkmenistan, and parts of the Caucasus.
With an estimated population of around 1000 individuals, it is classified as #Endangered on the IUCN Red List, primarily due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.
Protecting the Persian leopard is essential for maintaining biodiversity in its region.

#Leopards produce a few vocalizations, including growls, snarls, meows, and purrs. Cubs call their mother with an 'urr-urr' sound. To warn intruders, Leopards usually scratch trees, leaving claw marks.

Ever seen a big cat make this funny face? This #PersianLeopard in #SaidvaaNationalPark is showing the "Flehmen response"—a way felids analyze scents, especially pheromones, using their vomeronasal organ. It’s their version of "sniffing the air for clues"!

These #Leopards roar and growl threateningly, like Tigers, Lions and Jaguars. It is because a part of their voice box is replaced with a ligament, enabling them to stretch it to have a bigger sound passage.

Generally, Persian #Leopards prefer to spend most of their time alone. They have their territory and warn other Leopards to stay away by leaving scratches on trees, urinating, and pooping. #BigCat #Nikon

The #persianleopard (Panthera pardus tulliana) in Iraqi Kurdistan lives mainly in the Bamo, Qara Dagh and Khoshk Mts. Its population is very small (e.g., seven in Bamo) but poaching is rampant. Organizations like @LeopardsBeyond are crucial for #persianleopard survival.
