The write-up from Appleton's was printed the same year in the 'Franklin Institute Journal' @TheFranklin (April of 1898). The #Phasmatrope exhibition of the supposed waltz was presented to a supposed audience of 1,600 and one supposed reporter.

Unfortunately, we have no physical proof of Heyl’s projections, just 1600 witnesses and a reporter who wrote no story and took no photographs at such a well-attended event.

HENRY RENNO HEYL (1842-1919)
Heyl presented moving pictures to large audiences twice in the year 1870. He used his #Phasmatrope to show three subjects; a waltzing couple; a man making a speech; and a Japanese acrobat. They were presented on a revolving disk.
Unfortunately, we have no physical proof of Heyls projections, just 1600+ witnesses including at least one reporter. We have none of the photos of the dancers, and no disk showing the transparencies, but we do have the #Phasmatrope. -30-

#Heyl gives us the #Phasmatrope, which combines persistence of vision with photographs to produce an illusion of motion. It was styled from a magic lantern in terms of projection. An entirely synthetic illusion was the result.
Some have given #Heyl the rights to claim the first to project motion pictures, as an early promotional poster [written from a letter by Heyl himself] claims of the Heyl #Phasmatrope. Published in the Popular Science Monthly of July 1898 by Appleton, it reads;

Did Henry Heyl pre-project Muybridge? We may never know. Heyl apparently projected waltzing dancers just as Muybridge had, less than a decade later. Heyl produced 18 transparencies on a glass disk & may have shown these moving images to audiences on 2 separate occasions in 1870.
