Have you ever thought or asked where tea pluckers go to the toilet? The plantation sector faces a shortage of 35,000 toilets. Women workers are forced to use the toilet in the field as a result. Many plantation companies fail to provide safe sanitation for their mostly female workforce. Many also expect the Government to provide these toilets at tax payer cost. It should not be the Government’s role to provide safe sanitation for the employees of private companies. When I launched the Field Room programme to build 40 safe spaces for women workers to use a toilet, change and have a meal, plantation companies barely contributed towards it. While we celebrate women during this month, we also need to hold accountable entities that fail to provide our women with the bare minimum. Women’s day or month is not about glossy newspaper ads or panel discussions in 5 star hotels. It’s about action, accountability and real change.
