I gave leaflets to endocrinology @UHDBTrust for the benefit of #phpt patients. They've been relegated to the basement. I hope they read them before binning, as they spend their days in windowless rooms & might need our advice themselves, & impact their 2.85 watch & wait practice

A lady diagnosed with #hyperparathyroidism spoke to GP about reducing work due to extreme fatigue. He said it's likely caused by #perimenopause due to being 44 despite normal FSH. Offered HRT. Well, it couldn't be caused by #PHPT in his mind could it? She must be one of the 4%.
A lady with primary #hyperparathyroidism 20 years had surgery in February. Her surgeon removed the scan located adenoma then tested #PTH which had increased, so he searched and found the second adenoma. She's finally cured and recovering. Nobody should suffer 20 years with #PHPT
Another confused patient, another dismissive #endocrinologist refused to even see the #hyperparathyroid patient despite an increase in #parathyroid hormone. For 12 years we've seen that endocrinologists are often a danger to #PHPT patients. GPs need to know to bypass them. @rcgp
@bmj_latest @now_its_nora This is entirely true for #Hyperparathyroid patients who are already at risk. The postcode lottery of finding an endocrinologist who understands #PHPT already exists. Some will escape by self funding, which is likely the incentive behind this new rule. Those who can't will perish
A lady with #hypercalcemia a year ago; 2.84, monitored sporadically. Oct 2.89, Feb 3.33 & very high PTH. This result wasnt followed up (because endo was on A/L) so she chased them 2 weeks later. Admitted urgently due to risks of 'coma, CA or death'. Typical #NHS #PHPT #Manchester
A challenge for doctors telling patients their calcium isnt high enough yet: put a plug in a sink & turn on the taps. When the sink overflows (like elevated #parathyroid hormone), tell yourself its only a #mild flood. Don't turn off the taps, but monitor the damage. That's #PHPT
I searched #endocrinology on here looking for mentions of #hyperparathyroidism. Over 3 years of posts and the only 2 were mine. In 2016 we wrote to all NHS Trusts advising a need for a #PHPT expert. Patient experience shows it hasn't happened yet but is still very much needed.

Lessons to be learned by doctors enforcing watch & wait for calcium 2.85-3.00. This self funded lady had pre-op calcium 2.61 & was very symptomatic. Scans showed one #adenoma. A scan guided surgeon would have left her uncured. The NHS is failing #PHPT patients. @wesstreeting
14 years ago, I wrote to six #parathyroid surgeons and @BAETS_UK that the number of patients diagnosed with primary #hyperparathyroidism was the tip of the iceberg. In 2026, are there any UK parathyroid surgeons who think I was mistaken? The NHS bursting at its seams with #PHPT
