Lately in #PHY533 #QuantumComputing: We can write the amplitudes of α|0⟩+β|1⟩ in a list called a vector. A gate maps |0⟩ → a|0⟩+b|1⟩ and |1⟩ → c|0⟩+d|1⟩, which we write as a table called a matrix. From these, we can deduce basis vectors and vector-matrix multiplication.

Yesterday in #PHY533 #QuantumComputing: Global phases are irrelevant, so a qubit's state is α|0⟩ + βe^{iφ} |1⟩ for real α and β. Per normalization, we can write α = cos(θ/2) and β = sin(θ/2). With θ and φ as polar and azimuthal angles, we get a point on the Bloch sphere.

Today in #PHY533 #QuantumComputing: We had a Qubit Touchdown tournament, with $20 of prize money at stake. In the finals, the students tied 5 touchdowns each and opted to split the money $10 each. Then we discussed the Bloch sphere, quantum gates, and complex numbers.

Today in #PHY533 #QuantumComputing: Any logic operation can be performed using NOT, AND, and OR gates. But NOT and AND can implement OR, so we just need NOT and AND. Furthermore, NAND can implement NOT and AND, so NAND is a universal gate.

Today in #PHY533 #QuantumComputing: Something with two states carries the smallest amount of information possible. We can use the binary digits (bits) 0 and 1 to represent them. A bit is the smallest unit of classical information.
