#Nepenthes #pongoides (#Caryophyllales) is a #newspecies of Nepenthes #pitcherplants, endemic to northern #Borneo (Damit, A. et al.,2024). More precisely it is endemic to the area of the #Meliau Hill in the Telupid District in #Sabah, East #Malaysia. The species is remarkable for its #size and the one of its pitchers and an indumentum with reddish #trichomes, reminding to the fur of #OrangUtans, which explains the species' #epitheton "pongoides". The #distributionarea of the plant is about 10 square kilometers in size and only 39 mature plants were discovered, which is why N. pongoides is #criticallyendangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (#IUCN) Red List. The pitchers grow near the soil and are seemingly specialized to trap soil #arthropodes (see also Cosmos article by Marcy, A., 2025). Like the #carnivorous pitchers of Sarracenia, also Nepenthes pitchers are #ephemeral #microhabitats for #phoretic #mites (for example #Histiostomatidae) and #nematodes and other organisms. The organism biodiversity being adapted in living inside the normally hostile pitcher traps is commonly quite high. The species composition can be specific for pitcher plant species or clades.
