I think the relationship may reflect lower sandeel availability (rather than lower preference/reliance) due to seas warming more quickly in the northern North Sea compared to south and knock on effects up food chain? Lots to think about! #WSTC7 #PopSesh1

@IngridPollet @SydneyCollins23 I saw that! The plot in @SydneyCollins23 presentation was very striking! I wonder if it has to do with where the gulls are nesting in relation to the storm-petrels? It would be neat to see how much predation happens in those overlap periods #WSTC7 #PopSesh1

@RSPBScience #WSTC7 #PopSesh1 2/4 We looked at geographic variation in occurrence of the 3 main prey types. Probability of samples containing #sandeel higher in #GreaterNorthSea than #CelticSeas and declined with latitude. Opposite true for #gadids. But no geographic variation for #clupeid

#WSTC7 #PopSesh1 1/4 To date, knowledge of #kittiwake diet in Britain & Ireland has come from relatively few colonies. Our #seabirdDiet samples collected during @RSPBScience tracking #fieldwork allowed us to investigate how diet varies geographically. #ornithology

4/4 #WSTC7 #PopSesh1 Predation levels likely unique to each colony (predator spp/densities). Predation may contribute to low adult survival (78% in Atlantic colonies, 71% near gull nests, vs. 97+% in BC colonies) and therefore population declines. Direct nest monitoring required

3/4 #WSTC7 #PopSesh1 4000 adult* LHSP depredated annually on BP, none on CI. Culprits were gulls (42%), owls (10%) & unknown (48%). Predation on CI & egg/nestling predation scarcely detected & not subjected to analyses.

2/4 #WSTC7 #PopSesh1 Monitored predation using #transects. Recorded location of remains incl. feather piles, #gull & #owl pellets, dug up burrows & eggs outside of burrows, then removed to avoid recounting. Calculated predation rate & determined predations per breeding season.
