If you want to understand what is going on in the heads of PP leaders, you will not go far wrong by reading the Horn Review account/website , which is an affiliate of #Ethiopia's PP Foreign Ministry. And especially if you want to know what their adventurism about sea-access and other invented crisis in Ethiopia aimed at distracting the populace from the horror show in the current Ethiopian politics, Horn Review is your reference.
Their latest article by certain Yonas Yizezew, Researcher no less entitled 'Ethiopia’s Red Sea Ambitions and the U.S. Pivot: Reshaping Horn of Africa Geopolitics' is another article displaying a palpable desperation and misrepresentation of an interview carried with the US Ambassador to Ethiopia (Ambassador Ervin Massinga @USEmbassyAddis )
The article presents a dramatic and largely inflated view of U.S. support for Ethiopia’s maritime aspirations, wrongly suggesting a seismic geopolitical shift in favor of PP. It claims that Ambassador Ervin Massinga’s recent comments represent a watershed moment where #Washington has decisively endorsed Ethiopia’s bid for Red Sea access. However, this interpretation stretches the facts to almost unrecognizable state.
In reality, Ambassador Massinga reiterated consistent U.S. stance: that #Ethiopia's predicted economical growth and influence, should pursue economic and diplomatic solutions to expand trade routes and meet development needs. And the US and his office are willing to support this endeavor. This does not constitute an endorsement of any unilateral or territorial maritime claim—nor does it imply strategic backing for illegal and provocative port access initiatives.
The notion that the U.S. has transformed PP’s unilateral maritime ambition into a legitimate geopolitical cause is baseless and wishful thinking. There is no evidence the U.S. has conferred new legal or political authority to PP’s adventurous and dangerous quests that can engulf the Horn of #Africa into futile wars and chaos.
Assertions that the U.S. is pivoting away from #Egypt toward #Ethiopia ignore #Washington’s broader regional strategy, which still heavily depends on long-standing military, diplomatic, and economic ties with #Cairo.
The most interesting revelation about what PP are thinking is that #Djibouti's position as #Ethiopia’s lifeline is under imminent threat, or that Gulf states are rapidly re calibrating around Ethiopian maritime ventures due to U.S. backing, is highly speculative and unsupported by current evidence.
Another revealing PP thinking in the article is the fact that they are trying to appeal to Trump administration by mentioning #China and #Russia influence in the region. However, while the U.S. always states it does have counter-terrorism priorities in the region, it is unlikely the Trump Administration will see PP’s adventurism to the Red Sea as a security or strategic issue, nor has it indicated willingness to underwrite any militarized solution. Far from it!
The article neglects the history of illegal occupation of #Eritrea’s ports by Ethiopia and the current sovereign rights Eritrea holds over its ports—a critical omission that highlights the intentions of PP and what their ultimate goals are.
In essence, the author conflates routine diplomatic language with a strategic shift that simply hasn’t occurred. The U.S. remains committed to regional stability, dialogue, and lawful trade cooperation—not to redrawing borders or enabling coercive access to maritime routes.
