Red clover is native from #Europe towards India, Mongolia and parts of North Africa. The species was meanwhile additionally introduced almost worldwide due to human activities.
The plant grows wild in rich #meadows with relatively high nutrient content. The roots reach meters deep into the soil. The red clover overwinters as a #hemicryptophyte, meaning that the above-ground portion of the vertical root sprouts again in the spring.
The clover species is also cultivated by humans for various reasons. It is a good #fodderplant for grazing livestock. However, it is also a good preparer of better, more nutrient-rich #soil in #agriculture. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the red clover is associated with #symbiotic #bacteria (#Rhizobia) in the rhizomes of the roots, which are able to fix elemental nitrogen from the environment by converting it into amino acids. It is also used mixed with other clover and plant species as a substitute for maize in biogas facilities.
Red clover can have parasites, for example beetles of the Curculionidae, such as Tychius picirostris, which is tied to various clover species, or Tychius #stephensi, which is specifically associated with red clover. They can be serious agricultural pests.
My attached photos show T. picirostris on red clover in #Berlin, which can be identified by the six segments on its antennal funiculus.
Tychius picirostris is associated with various clover species and is native to Europe. Due to human introduction, it is now also commonly found in North America. In Central Europe, the #adults actively appear on clover beginning in spring and continuing throughout the summer months. Previously, they overwintered as adults in hiding places near suitable food plants. The adult beetles feed on the flowers and foliage of the clover. The #larvae, however, develop inside the #seedpods and feed on the seeds, thus causing damage to agricultural crops.
According to G. Tiwari et al. (2024), Tychius picirostris in populations of white clover fields in western Oregon (USA) exhibits resistance to certain pesticides, which can be attributed to #evolutionaryadaptations to long-term pesticide treatment. This resistance is against the active ingredients bifenthrin and malathion, with a particularly strong resistance ratio to #bifenthrin. Thus it distinguished the Oregon beetles from the comparison population from Canada.
According to the authors, the resistance is based on the presence of phase I and II detoxification #enzymes in the beetles of the Oregon populations, which enable metabolic resistance to bifenthrin. The results represent a systematic challenge for agriculture and are also interesting from an evolutionary biological perspective.
The authors C. Jiang et al. (2020) examined the species diversity of the beetle genus Tychius Germar, 1817 occurring in China in the form of a taxonomic inventory. Thirty-five #species were identified, of which only 14 were previously known to occur in China. T. picirostris is among the 18 species identified for the first time in China through this study. The authors described three species as new species: T. tachengicus, T. obrieni, and T. zhangi.
