Important thread re contingent #precariate academics. Departments/Faculties/Universities, remember to recognize all your instructional staff! You have excellent precarious instructors doing excellent work. Give them a shout out once in a while. It's great for morale.
One of the really unnecessary frustrations of being a contingent academic is departments that are unwilling to tout your achievements (as opposed to tenure-line faculty).
What - or more correctly, whose - work gets blasted out to the department listserv or put on the website. 1/

@JustCodeCulture Lovely 19th c. #startup photo! Interestingly only two or so #smiles (on what seem the youngest): a lack of photo-related #affect typical of the day. And quite unlike #work / startup photos today . . . πππ€ͺπ #precariate

list of short term appointments in Classics. I how many are for new positions & how many will simply see the current instructors re-applying for their old / own jobs. We need to stop this cycle of short term positions in favour of longer term appts & conversion. #precariate

Iβm an early career researcher. I canβt be on #LivUniStrike today to #FightForHealthJobs because @LivUni made me redundant at the end of last month with a 7-month-old baby to support. Solidarity to my former colleagues and with #HLS32 @PrecariousUoL @ULivUCU2
@ClassicsAtRisk Thank you! As a long-term member of the #precariate, I hate the language used to erase us and I greatly appreciate your response to me.
@agrabia @DunchinYEG It's not just support staff. #Precariate instructors will be losing their jobs as well. The cuts to #abpse hurt all sectors of our post secondary institutions and we need to stand together and fight the cuts as one.
@DunchinYEG @tchwfrzr I agree that once demolished, the houses will be gone forever, but I'd also argue, as one of the vulnerable #precariate who is very worried right now, that once fired, people might be around to be rehired and even if they are, the time spent unemployed is very scary.
Why was a "visiting assistant professor" hired to "oversee" the class, with Dead Professor listed as instructor & students taught via canned lectures by the dead professor? What does this mean for those of us in the #precariate if this becomes the new norm? #abpse #cndpse
when it comes to losing our jobs, itβs not that the need for us disappears. Itβs rather that every single year we have to reapply for our jobs and we can be replaced by a new person, just because. Thatβs the reality or teaching as a member of the #precariate. #MakeItFair4CAS
No academic, including members of the #precariate, is "just" a teacher -- we are engaged in scholarly activity, and contribute to our discipline, either through publications or by teaching our students about our discipline, staying up to date with new developments in our fields.
My work to improve teaching & my academic research is done on my own time: I receive no support beyond my Professional Expense Allowance (a benefit I have that most #precariate members don't & so I acknowledge my privilege here) & it doesn't count in my annual evaluation.
While I am grateful I have a modicum of job security & benefits, there are still things I (one of the lucky #precariate members) don't have and that does impact my job. I have been teaching 8 courses a year for 17 years and have never had a sabbatical and never will have one.
Today is a Social Media Day of Action for Contract Academic Staff, so I thought I'd pause in my regular academic work of grading, course prep, and working on my book manuscript to offer a snapshot of A Day in the Life of a long-time member of the #precariate. #MakeItFair4CAS
βTen of Australia's 39 public universities are now repaying money, undertaking audits or in dispute with casual staff who believe the sector is being propped up by an "underclass" of workers.β #wagetheft #precariate https://t.co/oQUCg5kzAs
@physedchick @UAlbertaSPH @ATS_UofA Congratulations on the improved position! Thanks for all you've done at #UAlberta over the years to help secure improvements for the #precariate! We still have a long way to go, but you have helped to make progress and baby steps are still steps.
@RicAcuna Yes, we should be working for increased security for the #precariate. We should be calling for conversion of ATS to permanent positions, not lamenting our existence. If more faculty positions are created, we need to convert ATS to them, not fire ATS to hire faculty.
@AlexUsherHESA True, #cndpse faculty are paid year round, but #precariate aren't: lots of instructional staff who usually teach on 8 month contracts now scrambling, for free, to prep courses for remote teaching, & some of them don't know if they'll be re-hired so are prepping on spec. #abpse
