🌍 International Day of the Girl Child | October 11 Behind a joyful girl stands a caring parent. Every girl deserves to grow up in a home where care, respect, and equality are the norm — not violence or discrimination. Yet too many girls still grow up in environments where harmful gender norms limit their potential and normalize violence against women and children. At RWAMREC, through our gender-transformative parenting curriculum, Bandebereho, we have witnessed how change begins at home. When fathers and mothers learn to communicate with empathy, share caregiving, and challenge harmful norms, families become safer, stronger, and more nurturing. Evidence — including from Equimundo, Promundo, and UNICEF Innocenti — shows that such parenting programmes can reduce both violence against women and violence against children. They promote healthier relationships, strengthen parents’ well-being, and empower girls and boys to grow up free from fear and full of possibilities.
