Is #quantum_computing overhyped? From a hardware perspective-absolutely.
The talks is almost entirely dominated by software, algorithms, and qubit count milestones. We celebrate crossing 1,000 qubits, then 10,000. But almost nobody asks: how many of those #qubits are actually doing useful computation?
The honest answer is roughly 50-100. The rest are consumed by #quantum_error_correction overhead and even then, current #superconducting_processors still operate at gate error rates around 10^-3 , far from what fault-tolerant computation demands. That gap exists because these qubits are not limited by fundamental quantum physics, they are limited by microscopic hardware noise. #Nanometre-thin amorphous oxide layers inside #Josephson_junctions and defects at metal-air and metal-substrate interfaces host "parasitic two-level systems (#TLS)" that silently drain coherence. These are the dominant energy relaxation bottleneck in every state-of-the-art transmon device built today.
This is exactly the problem I investigated as a part of my Quantum computing course work. My report:- "Microscopic Origins of Hardware Noise: Two-Level System Artifacts in Superconducting Qubits"- traces the problem from circuit fundamentals through to mitigation strategies: junction area reduction, tantalum-based platforms achieving millisecond coherence, phonon engineering via acoustic bandgap metamaterials, and active TLS frequency control.
On the simulation side, the report includes a hands-on finite-element eigenmode and energy participation ratio analysis of a #transmon resonator system, built using #QiskitMetal and solved via #AnsysHFSS. Numerically extracting the qubit frequency, anharmonicity, and substrate participation ratio from a full 3D electromagnetic simulation rather than relying on lumped-circuit estimates gave a geometry-aware picture of exactly where TLS-hosting interfaces contribute most to loss, directly tying the simulation back to the physics discussed throughout the report.
