Photo highlights from today's #radlib18 - my fave is LIBRARIANS ARE FIRE - artwork by a young public library user, which featured in Lydia Julien's inspiring & nuanced talk on 'The Transcultural Library'. Others from Nick Thurston's fresh talk on 'the house that heals the soul'.

Thanks to everyone who came to and contributed to #radlib18. A great day of theory discussion and some actions for ongoing practice.
There's now an impromptu workshop on how to create a card catalogue. Just don't use Marc21 for digital records #radlib18
Daydreaming about a union catalogue of zine libraries in the UK... #radlib18
What software to use for cataloguing? Omeka (https://t.co/A79am921YF) is a good open-source, off-the-shelf product to quickly make an online (or offline) catalogue. Also spreadsheets and databases work in a pinch #radlib18
There's an emphasis on doing this work collectively i.e. not relying on individuals or cataloguing authorities / models which are potentially outdated. Catalogue /with/ the user community #radlib18
Don't underestimate weeding. Treasure, trash, and try. Get rid of outdated materials like old books on trade union law or books you otherwise don't want in the collection (Holocaust denial? TERF works? SWERF works?) #radlib18
How to classify a radical collection? Thematically is good but requires deep engagement with the user community to understand their themes. Geographically is easy but leans too heavily on the faux-objectivity of nation-states #radlib18
This is about one particular collection of radical works but can apply to other collections of radical texts, zines, ephemeral material, etc. #radlib18
We're now opening up a discussion about autonomous cataloguing practice. This is an open discussion asking for advice and thoughts on how to catalogue a specific collection of radical books #radlib18
What we're pushing against is a top-down perception of what a library is being pushed on libraries - and society - by neoliberal value system(s) #radlib18
@RadicalLibs Whereas we emphatically see the library as political.
There's a shared language of perceptions and emotions in reaction to the library. Some users and cultures perceive the library as a neutral space, a space without politicization #radlib18
How do people coming to the UK from other cultures perceive the library? We're hearing from someone who interviews users on their cultural expectations of the library. This is radical praxis #radlib18
Librarians are not gatekeepers we are gateways #radlib18
Addressing cultural perceptions of the library and our (library workers') intuitive articulation of what libraries are. Answering the tentative question, "Is this free?" #radlib18
What do we mean by transcultural? It's the phenomenon of bringing together and merging cultures. Seeing yourself in the other #radlib18
We're making a zine out of discussions and thoughts about today's #radlib18. So we're looking for any contributions from people attending or following along.
