The Abolition of the IPP Sentence
The fact that the IPP sentence was abolished in 2012 acknowledges that it was flawed and led to unjust outcomes. However, the continued use of public protection to keep these prisoners in prison indefinitely has been criticized as inconsistent with the reasons for its abolition. The IPP Action Plan’s focus on placing IPP prisoners in high-security prisons like HMP Frankland (Westgate Unit) and HMP Whitemoor (Fens Unit) has drawn criticism for its potentially negative impact on the mental health and rehabilitation of IPP prisoners.
Issues with the Westgate and Fens Units
High-Security Conditions: Both Westgate (HMP Frankland) and Fens (HMP Whitemoor) units are located in Category A prisons, which house some of the most dangerous offenders. These conditions may not be appropriate for IPP prisoners, particularly those with mental health concerns or who pose a lower risk. The intense security and often isolating conditions can exacerbate feelings of distress and entrapment for individuals serving indeterminate sentences.
Stigma and Labeling: Being housed in units associated with personality disorders or severe mental health challenges can carry a stigma for prisoners. Many report feeling like they are trapped in a system that sees them as inherently “broken” or irredeemable, reinforcing their sense of helplessness.
Mental Health Impact
The combination of indefinite detention, restrictive high-security environments, and the psychological demands of these units has been linked to worsening mental health for many IPP prisoners. AlARMING to hear these words directly from an IPP, who has been HARMED by IPP REFORM! And describes the SENTENCE has made him give up on REFORM and the AUTHORITIES because of HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES! The SENTENCE has made him nearly take his LIFE!
Just heartbreaking 💔 all he wants is the RESENTENCE and IPP ABOLISHED!
He is so mentally distressed writing this that spelling mistakes occur! Which is unusual of this IPP! The pressure to get his words across is evident!
Organisations have been misled into thinking IPPs want reform, they don’t we represent countless IPPs who have said they just want resentencing and the sentence to end!
PREVENTABLE DEATHS of IPPs will happen as the mention of REFORM for IPPs enters the prisons, and this will lead to further blood being on someone’s hands!
They can’t take no more incarceration and they are aware that REFORM will prolong their incarceration and lead to parole knock backs!
Let’s all unite together and fight for what we have been fighting to do for so long and that is for the urgency of resentencing IPPs, and giving them the after care services in the community. To give them the right to get on with their lives!
