🌕 This preliminary evidence suggests that #emotionaldysregulation in early childhood might represent an important key mechanism involved in poor #rewardprocessing in early adolescence.
More research is needed to explore whether this link is causal & potentially reciprocal.

🌓 We used data from the #MillenniumCohortStudy with a sample of 12,217 cohort members from the UK.
The #CambridgeGamblingTask measured #rewardprocessing at 11-14 yrs and a 10-item questionnaire measured independence #selfregulation + #emotionaldysregulation at 3, 5, 7 yrs.

🌒 While previous studies do show a link b/w #selfregulation and #rewardprocessing most of this research is cross-sectional and/or limited to adults/clinical samples of children.
Our study aims to explore this using a longitudinal design and a general youth population sample.

🌑 Available research shows that poor #selfregulation and #rewardprocessing are associated with later #mentalhealth problems, academic failure and risky behaviours.
Therefore it is important to first understand how these regulatory and motivational processes are linked.
