本日は、英国の写真家&グラフィック・デザイナーの、ロバート・フリーマン氏の誕生日。
洋楽ファンにとっては、初期〜中期のビートルズの、陰影に富むドラマチックなアルバム・カバーを手掛けた事でよく知られている。他にも例があるけども、晩秋〜初冬の時期に発売された2点のアルバム・カバーを。
左画像の英国４枚目のアルバムは、世界のアイドルとなり揉みくちゃな一年を過ごした、疲れ切った彼等の1964年を締めくくる作品。彼等を囲む周景のフォーカスを甘めに滲ませた中に見える、こちらを見据える笑わないアイドルの姿。
右画像は英国6枚目の作品(の、表題文字を黄銅色に変えた米盤バージョン)。フォト・セッションで撮った写真を、メイクシフトの投影用紙に映し出したところ、紙の歪みをなぞる様に曲がって見えた被写体が面白いというメンバーの講評を得て、その考えを活かすことにした、デザイナーとしてのワーク。大人へと脱皮したビートルズを象徴する、傑作ジャケとなった。

The photographs were urgently needed, so I had to improvise a studio setup at the hotel. It seemed natural to take black-and-white photographs of them in their usual sombre attire.

“Rubber soul” è il primo album dei #Beatles senza il nome della band sulla copertina firmata da #RobertFreeman. L’effetto allungato della foto fu casuale: un cartoncino su cui era proiettata cadde alterando l'immagine e i #FabFour chiesero di stamparla così.
