Finally in #s527, Matthew Stevens paper (here delivered by Emma Cavell) looks at why Owain Glyndŵr burned the towns of Wales.
Yet Gruffudd ap Maredudd was keen to deploy the geography of Chester (as Catherine McKenna notes). @CathAMClarke notes that the story of the coming of the roof by sea can be seen as a parallel to Exodus and possibly as a metaphor of deliverance? #s527
… Barry refers to the work of @CathAMClarke and @profhelenfulton (more here: https://t.co/9WdVp7oT9S - do take a look). #s527
Though it was the impact of the Glyndŵr rebellion that was probably most marked: the penal laws banning Welsh property owning or marriage, or trade were banned. But were they enforced? In 1403, Welsh residents were meant to be expelled: were they? If so where did they go? #s527
This paper forms part of her wider PhD and employs borough records and the Chester recognicence rolls - again using patronyms as a marker for Welshness in the records. #s527
Next in #s527 is @pamela_a_powell looking at Chester and the Welsh, in the early 1400s. As she says, it’s complicated…
This testamentary evidence could be better/more extensively used and one metric for tracking Welsh populations is the use of patronymics (e.g. Ieuan ap Dafydd/Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd). Can we be more systematic? #s527
Worth nothing that there is a wealth of underexplored material and Deborah has found 1040 examples of ‘Welsh’ probate material 1442-1550 in the Herefordshire archive and c.1000 paper wills 1521-1550. #s527
Just getting underway with #s527, @IMC_Leeds and the first of two sessions on the Medieval March of Wales, sponsored by @MortimerSociety with Professor Deborah Youngs reflecting on the evidence of wills from Herefordshire diocese.
Coming to @IMC_Leeds next week? If you have even the most passing interest in the history of Wales, @pastdeeds and I have assembled two excellent panels on the medieval March of Wales featuring monasticism, war, fire, and poetry. #HanesCymry
Join us on Tuesday! #s527 and #s627
