Xhariep District Police management as well as Trompsburg police held a farewell function at Caleb Motshabi Hall in Trompsburg on Friday, 7 August 2026, for the retired Warrant Officer Johannes Jurie van Rensburg.
Oom Jurie as he was affectionately known amongst the Trompsburg community devoted 39 years and 222 days of his life to the South African Police Service.
During his farewell function, most of the speakers described him as one member who loved his work. He was devoted, forever willing to assist and show the ropes to junior members. #ServiceExcellence ML

#sapsFS [LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR RAPE ACCUSED AND 15 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER]
The #SAPS Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, together with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 30-year-old Themba Malinga from Boiketlo Village, Qwaqwa.
Malinga was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and 15 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 6 August 2026.
The matter was heard before Magistrate Msimanga, with Ms Nteo representing the State. The investigation was conducted by Detective Warrant Officer Malefu Doreen Mbule of the Phuthaditjhaba FCS Unit.
On 16 August 2022 at approximately 21:00, a 25-year-old woman from Boiketlo Village in Qwaqwa was walking alone near a tavern when she was confronted by Malinga, whom she knew.
It is reported that Malinga covered her mouth with his hand and dragged her to a nearby donga, where he instructed her to undress before raping her. He subsequently took her to his residence, where he continued to rape her several times during the night.
At approximately 04:00 the following morning, Malinga attacked the victim with a broken beer bottle, causing a serious injury to her neck. He then fled the scene without rendering any assistance.
The injured victim managed to reach a nearby house, where she received assistance before being taken to hospital.
The suspect was traced by police in 2022 but could not be arrested at the time.
In 2025, the victim unexpectedly came across Malinga and immediately went to the police station to report his whereabouts. Police subsequently arrested him. He was denied bail and remained in custody while the matter proceeded through court.
Malinga was ultimately found guilty of rape and attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and 15 years’ imprisonment for attempted murder.
The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer for her diligent work in ensuring that the accused was brought to justice.
“The sentence sends a strong message that crimes against women and children remain a priority for law enforcement and the criminal justice system. I commend the investigating officer for her excellent work and the victim for immediately reporting to the police when she encountered the accused, which ultimately led to his arrest and conviction,” said Lieutenant General Lesia.

The campaign was aimed at empowering young girls. During the campaign, sanitary towels were contributed to female learners.
The campaign was a success. A total of 72 female learners were reached and advised to empower one another. They were further educated on dignity, wellness, and good hygiene.
The continued implementation of these campaigns will strengthen trust between SAPS and the community while promoting improved service delivery and accountability.

The Fezile Dabi District conducted a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) under #OperationShanela II on the R549 in Deneysville.
The #SAPS Fezile Dabi District Commissioner, Major General Makubo, led the operation and actively participated by stopping and searching vehicles, interacting with motorists, and encouraging members of the public to comply with traffic regulations while supporting crime prevention initiatives. During the engagement, the District Commissioner emphasized the importance of cooperation between the South African Police Service and communities in creating a safer environment for all road users.
The objectives of the VCP were to detect and recover stolen vehicles and stolen property, remove illegal firearms, identify and confiscate illegal drugs, apprehend motorists driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and verify the legal status of foreign nationals. Police members also inspected vehicle documentation, drivers' licenses, and conducted vehicle searches.

Members of the #SAPS Welkom #AntiGangUnit Section C2, deployed in the Fezile Dabi District for the ongoing high-visibility, disruptive Operation Shanela II, continue to ensure that drug dealers find no safe haven in the province following a series of successful busts, arrests, and seizures.
The tactical interventions yielded the following operational successes:
Angola Section, Zamdela: While conducting patrols, members spotted suspicious activity at a local residence and maintained close observation. At approximately 21:00, officers tactically approached and gained entry to the premises.
A 49-year-old African male who attempted to flee was swiftly apprehended. Upon searching the suspect and the house, officers discovered quantities of nyaope, mandrax, and crystal meth, along with an undisclosed amount of cash. He was arrested for dealing in and possession of drugs.
Extension 3, Zamdela: Acting on a tip-off from a concerned community member regarding illicit drug sales, the team set up an observation post at an identified house due to frequent foot traffic. Officers closed in and caught two male suspects actively dealing drugs. A search resulted in the seizure of crystal meth and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The driver lost control on a curve along Harrismith Road, crashing into a tree and severely damaging the vehicle.

The #SAPS Fezile Dabi District Deputy Commissioner, Brigadier Sefatsa, led women in blue and the Women's Network during #OperationBasadi, which was conducted along the R34 in Edenville as part of the Women's Month activities.
The operation brought together women police officers and PSA members from various stations within the Fezile Dabi District in partnership with the Community Policing Forum (CPF), the Free State Traffic Department, and the Department of Education..
The multidisciplinary operation was conducted simultaneously through various deployments. One team visited Ngwathe Secondary School, where approximately 150 female learners were educated on cyberbullying, the dangers of engaging in sexual activities at a young age, walking alone at night, child pornography, and the risks associated with consuming space muffins and other illicit substances. Learners were also encouraged to report incidents of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), sexual offenses, and any other forms of abuse. Members reassured the learners that they are valued, loved, and should never remain silent when faced with abuse or victimisation. The awareness campaign aimed to empower young women with knowledge to make informed decisions and protect themselves from crime and abuse.
At the same time, other teams conducted compliance inspections at licensed liquor outlets to ensure adherence to the Liquor Act and other applicable legislation. Members also conducted inspections to identify illegal gambling activities.
Simultaneously, another team conducted a roadblock along the R34, where members stopped and searched vehicles, verified drivers' documentation, inspected the roadworthiness of vehicles, and searched for unlicensed firearms, drugs, suspected stolen property, and stolen livestock.
Members also executed drug operations by searching alleged drug houses in an effort to curb the distribution and abuse of illicit substances within the district.
Operation Basadi yielded the following results:
Approximately 150 female learners reached through the school awareness campaign.
- Five licensed liquor outlets inspected for compliance.
- One J534 notice issued for failure to display a liquor license certificate.
- One J534 notice issued for illegal gambling.
- 74 vehicles searched.
- 34 persons searched.
- Two traffic fines issued for unroadworthy vehicles.
Four alleged drug houses searched.

It is alleged that on 1 August 2026, the bus was travelling from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape. While passing through Smithfield, the driver allegedly lost his way and turned onto the R701 Road. He subsequently lost control of the bus, causing it to overturn.
A total of 67 passengers were on board the bus at the time of the incident. Of these, 38 passengers, comprising 21 men, 16 women, and one child, sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Police have launched a manhunt for three unknown armed suspects following a traumatic house robbery and kidnapping incident involving an elderly couple.
It is alleged that on 2 August 2026, a 73-year-old man and his 67-year-old wife were asleep at their home in Bophelong location when they were surprised by three armed males who gained entry by breaking a sliding door. The suspects demanded cash while assaulting both victims.
The suspects loaded household appliances into the victims’ vehicle and forced the victims into their own Suzuki vehicle and drove with them around Bloemfontein before taking them to Botshabelo. There, the victims were locked inside an unknown shack while the suspects performed fraudulent transactions and digitally transferred undisclosed sum of money from the victims' bank accounts using their cellphones.
On 04 August 2026, the suspects drove the victims back to their residence in Bophelong, left them inside the vehicle, and fled the scene on foot.

#sapsFS [IKAGENG DETECTIVES SOLVE MURDER CASE; ONE SUSPECT SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT, SECOND TO APPEAR IN COURT]
The dedicated investigative work of #SAPS Ikageng Detectives, supported by the Tactical Response Team (TRT), led to the successful resolution of a kidnapping and murder case, resulting in the arrest of two suspects connected to the kidnapping, murder and concealment of the body of a 31-year-old woman from Greenfields, Ikageng.
The victim was reported missing by a family member on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, after it was alleged that her former boyfriend, Nelson Matusse, had taken her from her home. An inquiry was subsequently registered. During the investigation, the victim’s sister received text messages and voice notes from the suspect demanding a ransom.
The investigating officer, Detective Constable Lipuo Ngesman, through an intensive investigation, linked the suspect to the crime and the crime scene in Lenasia.
On Saturday, 16 March 2024, under the authority of former Major General Molefe, who was the Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Crime Detection, a multidisciplinary team comprising Ikageng Detectives and TRT members travelled to Lenasia to trace the suspect.
The team successfully traced and arrested the suspect at another location.
During questioning, the suspect confessed to murdering the victim on the same day he abducted her. He further pointed out the location in Ikageng where he had disposed of her body. While returning to Ikageng, he admitted that he had paid a second suspect to burn the victim’s body approximately one week after the murder in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The suspect subsequently led police to an open field between Extension 7 and Promosa, where the burnt remains of the deceased were recovered.
The first accused, Nelson Matusse (37), was charged with murder, kidnapping and violation of a corpse. The second accused, George Matusse (35), was charged with defeating the ends of justice and violation of a corpse. During the investigation, both accused were also linked to and charged in separate cases of housebreaking and theft.
On Wednesday, 29 July 2026, the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court sentenced Nelson Matusse to life imprisonment for murder, 10 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping, 10 years’ imprisonment for violation of a corpse, and 11 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and theft. The court ordered that all sentences run concurrently with the life sentence.
George Matusse remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 September 2026, on charges of defeating the ends of justice, violation of a corpse, and four counts of housebreaking and theft.

It is alleged that on 1 June 2026, the victim was convinced by her partner to make a financial investment. They then spoke telephonically to a male who identified himself as Mr Mark from an alleged investment company. During their conversation, Mr. Mark allegedly requested the victim and her boyfriend to invest an amount of one million rands (R1 000 000) with an expected return on investment of R1.2 million.
On 4 June 2026, the victim invested an amount of one hundred and thirty thousand rands (R130 000) from her personal bank account into the Visitor Point investment account. She further deposited an amount of one hundred and sixty thousand rands (R160 000) the following day. Her boyfriend then promised to deposit the remaining difference into the investment company's account.
Two weeks later, the victim realised that something was amiss when she could not get hold of her partner or Mr Mark. The victim came to the realisation that she may have been defrauded she then reported the matter to the police. A case of fraud was registered for further investigations.
Shariffe Joseph Lobato and Maurice Mulindwa (38) have been identified as persons of interest. It is believed they may assist police with investigations.
Police are urging anyone who could help trace the persons of interest to come forward with information. #sapsFS [SON ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY MURDERING HIS FATHER]
Vredefort police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the death of his 61-year-old father following an alleged assault.
On Sunday, 2 August 2026, at approximately 16:10, Vredefort police responded to a complaint of an alleged assault at a residence in the Mapetla Section of Mokwallo.
Upon arrival, officers found the 61-year-old victim, identified as Mr Ndode Lenong, lying on a bed with head injuries and a swollen face. Police were informed that he had allegedly been assaulted by his son using an unknown object.
The victim was transported to Parys Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Bloemfontein for further medical treatment. On Monday, 3 August 2026, at about 09:10, he succumbed to his injuries. ML
