Like many other systems, most of the adults have been captured and eaten. This species is declining rapidly, and there is little time left to save it. #SaveTheHicatee
Lot's more baby (1-year-old) #turtles today! Still wish we were seeing more adults though.
#Hicatee hatch with bright orange noses, and the lose the color over time. #Research #SaveTheHicatee #Belize
Finally caught a beautiful male in this system (the turtle, not the gross human holding it). Unlike most #turtles, male #hicatee develop bright yellow, orange, or even green heads! It's one of the many things that makes this species so unique and interesting. #SaveTheHicatee
So long little ones. Stay away from the crocodiles and hunters. #Hicatee #Turtles #Conservation #Research #SaveTheHicatee
After helping us with our #turtle surveys, Karzon Santos made us this incredible p-cord #hicatee, complete with a yellow head & huge feet! You can check out more of his amazing artwork at Fox Knots And Paracords. (https://t.co/xczFug4ked) #SaveTheHicatee #Belize
Week 2 of #hicatee surveys with our good friends and research partners at @WCSBelize is off to a great start. We caught 7 more turtles (and 2 crocodiles) last night. We are up to 38 total for the year! Pretty good for a Critically Endangered species! #Turtles #SaveTheHicatee 1/2
Releasing the biggest #hicatee we've caught to date. 13.8 kg! Just look at those feet! We caught her during our surveys with @WCSBelize. #Turtles #Research #Conservation #SaveTheHicatee
A successful week of #hicatee surveys has come to an end. We even caught our biggest one yet, weighing it at 13.8 kg!! Historic data records the largest known hicatee to have weighed a whopping 22kg!

We are thrilled to announce that we have received a grant from the #Turtle #Conservation Fund to continue our long-term monitoring efforts for critically endangered #hicatee! We have big plans for this year and many #turtles to study. #FeildWork #Research #SaveTheHicatee
Great talk by @donaldmcknight2 on social behaviors in #turtles! If you missed it, don't worry, he's always happy to talk turtles and you can follow the #savannafieldstation on twitter, insta, and Facebook to keep up with the work!

Had a great morning snorkelling for #turtles. We caught 11 #hicatee and 1 slider (bokatura), including multiple of these adorable little turtle nuggets. They are roughly 1 year old and have a long way to go before becoming adults. #Belize #Conservation #Fieldwork #SaveTheHicatee
#Hicatee are truly gorgeous #Turtles. Females (top left) have a lovely chocolate-colored head, while males develop bright heads that can be yellow, orange, green, or grey and can be plain or covered with spots and other markings. #SaveTheHicatee #Belize #WilldifePhotography
#Hicatee are strict herbivores and have specialized beaks with rows of spikes to shred plants. They likely play an important role in aquatic ecosystems by breaking down plant matter. Protect the Hicatee for YOU ME and ALL A WE! @WCSBelize #SaveTheHicatee #Turtles #Conservation
Baby #Hicatee have the adorable habit of trying to hide their faces behind their front feet. Seems to be a "you can't see me if I can't see you" approach. Finding babies of this critically endangered species is always a treat. #SaveTheHicatee #Conservation #turtles
Had a great time this morning on KREM Wake Up Belize with @JarenSerano (@BFREEBZ_org ) and @YamzyNovelo (@WCSBelize ) talking about Hicatee Awareness Month and the importance of protecting hicatee. #SaveTheHicatee #Turtles
It's #HicateeAwarenessMonth, so here's a video of baby hicatee from the captive breeding program at BFREE exploring their new home after being released into the wild (video from 2020). This species is critically endangered due to over harvesting for food. #SaveTheHicatee #Turtles
New paper from the #research we are doing on #hicatee. Turns out, they are social and move in groups! This really changes how we think about these amazing #turtles and influences how we go about conserving them. #SaveTheHicatee #Belize https://t.co/dkkVEMbe2p
I'm my way to Arizona for #TSA2022. Can't wait to catch up with my fellow #turtle biologists and present more of our #research on #turtles in #Belize. #Conservation #SaveTheHicatee @TurtleSurvival
After 1.5 years, I am finally on my way back to #Belize to help with ongoing #turtle #conservation #research. #SaveTheTurtles #SaveTheHicatee (the photos is a young Staurotypus triporcatus)
