JUST IN: SB 222 by Sen. @Scott_Wiener (D-San Francisco) did *NOT* advance in the Senate Judiciary Committee this evening.
BACKGROUND: The legislation, which was co-authored by Wiener and Sen. @SashaReneePerez (D-Pasadena), would have allowed victims of major climate disasters -- including fires -- to seek damages from fossil fuel companies in court. This bill also would have allowed insurance companies to seek damages from fossil fuel companies as well.
It needed 7 "yes" votes to pass, but received just 5. The bill will be allowed to come up for reconsideration in the future.
