Four elements of good comments: (1) Begin with SPECIFIC positives; (2) identify specific areas for improvement; (3) give direction on how to improve; (4) let Ss know you believe they can do this! Thanks #sbgerhs !

@erhsBatGB C4 A2.2: Some tech tools I love to make frequent assessment easier? @quizizz , @quizlet , @GetKahoot ; @GoogleForEdu ; @edpuzzle -- check em out! There's more that I haven't had a chance to use as much yet, like @goformative and @Flipgrid and more! #sbgerhs
CH 4 Q4: The book lists what it believes should be considered when determining a summative grade, how is this similar or different from what you already do? What would you need to change to align with the books recommendations? #sbgERHS

@erhsBatGB This process has also allowed me to give students a lot more choice. You can see how I use backwards planning to try and ensure assessments and proficiency scales align: https://t.co/Ul9WSuQQCn

Happy Monday! We are continuing to discuss "A Teacher's Guide to Standards-Based Learning." Chapter 4 is all about assessments.
CH 4 Q1: How can you change your current assessments to align with proficiency scales?

Don't worry @urfavmathtchr while it may seem overwhelming (and sometimes it is) part of the reason for #sbgerhs is to provide support and resources!

@erhsBatGB A4: "how teacher's think about what and how they teach will change profoundly" intro, pg. 3 YIKES!

Very cool to see @thatmathclass recommending our #sbgerhs book to other teachers exploring grading practices!

@stacyyung I recommend "A Teacher's Guide to Standards-Based Learning" for that. I'm reading it for our school's summer bookclub (#sbgERHS) and it has useful resources/strategies for student-centered tracking of & reflecting on progress. :)

@erhsBatGB A3-5) Takeaway #2: I want to turn my class purpose from merely learning how to do math (which, tbh, few Ss care about) to learning how to learn & problem-solve (through the lens of math). Explicitly guiding Ss through the goal-setting process is a great place to start. #sbgERHS
@erhsBatGB A3-4: I think this will be especially powerful when tracking progress is tied to action plans. If Ss see they did 👍 when they made flash cards, but not as well when they read over their notes, they can do some metacognitive reasoning & make themselves better learners. #sbgERHS
@erhsBatGB A3-3: when Ss know the standard and what is expected of them, they can make more specific and meaningful goals. Instead of “I want to get a B” they can say “I want to be proficient in solving systems of equations with the elimination method.” #sbgERHS
@erhsBatGB A3-2: I think focusing feedback and conversations on comparing the student to their past progress and setting goals for future progress (rather than on comparing to other Ss or arbitrary grades) will help a lot with this, too. #sbgerhs

CH 3 A1: Goal setting is an area I want to improve on, right now my students use rubrics for each objective to help understand the goals but I want to do more reflecting on goals over time. #sbgerhs
Used this with some success this year:

Today’s goal- stay up on my #sbgerhs reading. Love reading others ideas and comments. Keep the thoughtful reflection coming 👍🏽#erhstweets
We are learning so much from the #sbgerhs book club!
Next week we’ll move to a slow chat on Twitter and post a question per day based on Chapter 3 of the book The Teachers Guide to Standards Based Grading.
There is still time to join us in the discussions! #erhsbatgb

@erhsBatGB A3) PLCs need to develop priority standards, then work together on RTI so all Ss achieve them. Office hours is a great opportunity to differentiate: enrichment for Ss working toward 4; extra practice for those at 3; and targeted remediation for those stuck at 2 & 1. #sbgERHS
@erhsBatGB A2) I see this as the primary strength of SBL, that all stakeholders (Ts, Ps, & Ss) are aware of the expectations for success. Ss need to know what they will need to know & be able to do so that they can see how their work aligns with & helps them toward that goal. #sbgERHS
@erhsBatGB A1) I see this being especially powerful for Ss who struggle. Repeatedly seeing failing scores on quizzes & tests is demotivating. But, comparing that to a pre-assessment and see how much they have grown (even if they still aren't proficient) - that's encouraging! #sbgerhs
@erhsBatGB A1) Instead of focusing on pacing/how to cover the massive amount of content in the textbook, we can focus on what Ss need to know, what they already know, and how to design learning activities to help bridge that gap. #sbgERHS
In case you didn't think I was reading enough books this summer, I am excited to also be a part of the book club for @ERHSOfficial teachers!
Slow chat for this club starts next week! You should join us! #sbgerhs #erhsbatgb
