Sometimes even the chosen walk through life without seeing the reward they’ve longed for. 😢💔

Corianton had to learn this lesson the hard way. May we learn from this example--which Mormon selected for our day--and be wiser.

Alma also shows that the best of us struggle to reconcile our wills to God, and that we can do good work despite these inner struggles, and in the end all will be made well.
Alma learned this lesson for himself, and he wanted Helaman to learn it, too.

Another part of the Korihor story that sticks out is the confession (Alma 30:53).
The devil did it. And he was an angel. And he told me to reclaim his people (for God?). And there is no God.
Korihor had ancient brain worms.

Most of us, most of the time are in Giddonah's circumstances, not Alma's. I"m not saying literally only President Nelson is allowed to respond to Twitter trolls, lol. I am saying use judgment and discretion. You don't always have to engage. It's hard. I know.

The part that puzzles me is the idea that exempting beliefs from the law is a matter of *equality*. Freedom of conscience is a good thing, but it seems like a question of liberty rather than equality.
Never have figured that one out.

This is the Atonement in action! The Good News is not that we suffer and then God rewards us. The Good News is that suffering *itself* is transformed to joy when we are united to God in His great work and partake--*together*--of His great joy.

I’ve been doing these #scripturethoughts for years now. I’ve gone through the BoM a couple of times. Sorry if you’ve heard this one before, but Alma 29 is my favorite chapter and the reason why hasn’t changed since my last read through, but it has changed since when I was a kid.
Mormon spent his life fighting the Lamanites much as Captain Moroni did. This makes a lot of sense out of this benediction, then, doesn’t it? Mormon fought the same war Moroni did. But how he must have longed for a chance to fight a war like Ammon’s instead.

I read Alma 28 last night, and it described how the Nephites reacted to the tragedy: "now surely this was a sorrowful day; yea, a time of solemnity, and a time of much fasting and prayer." (vs 6). That should be our model.

This is the lesson that Mormon took at the end of the long war between the Lamanites and the Nephites. In Alma 62:41 he noted that the war hardened some while it softened others.
We can't control events. We only get to decide how we react to them.

This is the nature of evil, and it’s illustrated plainly in the Book of Mormon. It happens with Korihor being killed by the Zoramites (Alma 30:60) and it happens with the daughter of Jared and Akish (Ether 8-9). Evil ultimately destroys itself.

We should do our best to see everyone in our life the way that Heavenly Father sees them. As a beloved child.
And we should do our best to see *ourselves* that way, too.

Given the additional context clues—Nephite Christian missionaries, a Nephite apostate religion (Nehors), local Lamanite traditions (the “Great Spirit”)—this must have been a really fascinating socio-religious landscape.

We should emulate that relentless optimism in following the commandments, our callings, and our righteous goals.
#scripturethoughts
Instead, the temptation was a kind of fantasy fundamentalism, rejecting the righteous innovations of Lehi and pining for a nonexistent past and the blind religion of a city they'd never seen.
#scripturethoughts
If we obey the mundane "what" of God's commandments then we will one day see the glorious "why".
#scripturethoughts
But the takeaways I see already are, (1) scripture is complicated and (2) sometimes the things that are worth risking a fight over and the things that aren’t are not the ones you think they are.

This is what the expression “Fools mock, but they shall mourn” is all about. It’d be easy to feel superior about dismissing Alma and Amulek… right up until you learned that there had been angels right there in your city all along, and you never knew.
