Not sure if everyone appreciates the level of collectibility of Ordinals vs. NFTs on other chains yet tbh Based on week around crypto conferences this week, I don’t think they do I quite like well-executed NFTs no matter the chain obv But from artist & collector perspective, Ordinals are quite superior to other types of NFTs imo In terms of collectibility Why tho? — 1) on-chain, on Bitcoin If you are a person thinking long-term, you should prefer your digital collectible to be on chain, vs being a pointer to a server, where original image can be changed or become void over time And if you come to conclusion that on-chain is valuable, it’s best to be on the most valuable & long-lasting chain out there Which is Bitcoin Ask yourself: if you wanna collect a piece which you intend to hand over to the next generation, how & where would you prefer this piece to be stored? 2) special satoshis NFTs on alt chains are smart contract outputs, essentially Some digital matter that’s on underlying level is fungible & unremarkable On Bitcoin, on the other hand, each ordinal inscription is tied to a specific sat (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) Beauty here is that one can enhance collectibility by inscribing art on sats that have “meaning” For the artist &/or the collector For example sats that were “handled” by Satoshi or Hal Finney Or from Silk Road seize Or from your kid’s birthday or any other meaningful date or event Only on Bitcoin 3) proof of traceability There’s a beautiful concept of parent-child inscriptions on Bitcoin You can create collections / pieces that tie, on-chain, to other, earlier pieces Can build out family trees over time Incredible provenance & story-telling power in this Only on Bitcoin — I personally became mostly focused on long-term premium collectibles, in the NFT space, over past 12-18 months And in this setting, ordinals just feel superior / most interesting to me I love a fair few NFTs on other chains too, for many reasons - art / collectibility / use cases / etc etc - but from pure provenance & durability, nothing beats ordinals, in my mind at least Fully expect, & hope, to see the grail collectible scene on ordinals expand over coming months & years Should be glorious (& dismiss the grifts that are put out there on the back of this trend wen happens pls)
