@BioSScotland @UKCEHseabirds @ScotGovMarine @IBIS_journal We are using this new data to identify and characterise predator-prey interactions on a range of spatial, temporal, and ecological scales. We will then use these approaches to examine any potential changes before vs. after wind farm construction. (4/6) #BOUasm24 #SESH3

@BioSScotland @UKCEHseabirds @ScotGovMarine @IBIS_journal To further understand predator-prey interactions, we are collecting new concurrent data. For seabirds, this is focussed on GPS tracking data of tagged individuals. For prey, dedicated acoustic and trawl surveys of fish are being conducted. (3/6) #BOUasm24 #SESH3

@BioSScotland @UKCEHseabirds @ScotGovMarine @IBIS_journal To quantify cumulative impacts of offshore wind developments on seabirds, a key component is understanding how seabird movements and foraging may be altered; however, understanding the mechanisms behind these possible impacts is currently limited. Today I’m presenting at the BOU "Birds and Net Zero" conference in York.🐦 This research is a collaborative piece of work between @BioSScotland, @UKCEHseabirds, and @ScotGovMarine, and is part of the #PrePAREDProject. 🧵 (1/6) #BOUasm24 #SESH3 @IBIS_journal

6/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. We can conclude that changes in wing length in urban Blue tits resulted from evolutionary change through natural selection for survival, and that this selection is ongoing. The data emphasizes that evolutionary change may proceed very rapidly.

5/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. In the forest, Blue tit survival is not affected by wing length. Analyses showed significant differences in slopes between city and forest habitats. Survival rates did not differ between the two habitats. #urbanization

4/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. Recapture rate, in both urban and forest habitats showed a significant dependence on wing length, in addition to time variations. In the urban habitat, we found that shorter wing length was associated with higher survival rates.

3/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. We analysed capture-recapture data from 164 urban and 391 forest Blue tits ringed between 2010 and 2023 at urban and forest locations in the Barcelona area. We examined the variation in survival rate according to wing length, using RMARK

2/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. Recent work has shown that the longer wing length of urban tits is not the result of divergent reproductive selection. Our aim is to test whether it is the result of divergent survival selection. #naturalselection

1/6 #BOU2024 #SESH3. In recent years, it has been found that birds from urban environments have shorter wings than those from forest. However, the key is to determine whether these changes result from plastic responses or adaptive evolution. #ornithology #museuciencies

#BOU2024 #Sesh3 6/6: European Project: Across Europe, urban tits wear paler plumage. But study sites differ. Disparities in intensity of urbanisation between cities may explain these differences, and I launched a European collaboration to explore this. 🌍🔬

#BOU2024 #Sesh3 4/6: Pixel Classification: I used a semi-automated classification tool to map the great tits territories at an 0.1 meters resolution. It segregates Google’s satellite imagery pixels into “impervious surfaces” vs. “vegetations”. 🛰️🌿

#BOU2024 #Sesh3 3/6: Mapping Territories: Ecologists turn to land-use maps (like Corine Land Cover). But these maps lack the precision needed to describe great tits’ restricted breeding grounds. 🗺️🔍

#BOU2024 #Sesh3 2/6: Faded Plumage: Among great tits, an urban pattern emerges—paler, duller plumage. Carotenoid-based breast feathers fades. Yet, urban environment descriptions remain categorical, we have to shift to continuous and replicable measures of urbanisation. 🌆🦆
