เช่นเดียวกับการเปิดหน้าดินที่ต้นแม่น้ำสาย ฝั่งเมียนมา ซึ่งทำให้เกิดการชะหน้าดิน ยิ่งฝนหนัก และดินไม่มีต้นไม้ปกคลุม จะทำให้เกิดการกัดเซาะโดยน้ำ และพาตะกอนดินเหล่านี้ลงมา สารพิษในดินจะถูกชะลงมาพร้อมกัน น้ำท่วมแม่สายหลายรอบเป็นตัวอย่างให้เห็นผลกระทบจากการทำเหมืองแบบมักง่ายของจีนแล้ว
