The HSE Drugs Group has recommended that a drug for Friedreich's ataxia should not be paid for by the HSE. Friedreich’s ataxia is a condition that damages the sufferer’s spinal cord, peripheral nerves and part of their brain. The symptoms of the disease worsen over time and while some patients can live into their 60s, others die much earlier. The drug, Skyclarys, has been considered too expensive to be made available – at a cost of €280,000 per patient per year. Director of the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics Professor Michael Barry told us more about why the decision was made.
