First (and only) time seeing this species - and this doesn’t appear to be a larval-stage - perhaps a juvenile, just post-metamorphosis. #soapfish #larvalsoapfish #blackwater #blackwaterdiving #blackwaterphotography #chrisgug #gug #gugunderwater

Two different #soapfish larvae from the same dive last week. The 1st is ~4mm, while the 2nd is ~6mm. They are indeed on the “no-lick list”, as the adults are well known for their ability to exude a white toxic goo (the “soap”) through their skin when stressed, (or licked).

The whitespotted soapfish didn’t make it into the 2023 CCC Calendar, but if it keeps up appearances like this morning, there’s hope for next year! 🧠🪸🧼🐟#soapfish #whitespottedsoapfish #coralcitycalendar #coralcitycamera #miami #portmiami #miamibeach #biscaynebay #coralcity

Ever heard of a #Soapfish? These small memebers of the grouper family are named for the toxic muscus they create when stressed. This makes them a difficult speceis for aquaria because they can kill other fish in tanks with them 😳

Todays #WowWednesday feature is on the Soapfish. As the name suggests they produce a sudsy secretion similar to soap bubbles. #nept #soapfish #fish #marinelife #ocean #Caribbean

Fun #Fact: #Soapfish got their name as when they are agitated, they can produce a toxic body mucus that forms a slimy, soap like froth into the water. The toxic mucus serves as a deterrent to predators.
