Happy #socks4docs day!
A medical career is a marathon, not a sprint. You deserve to enjoy it and be well.

Bit nippy this morning, glad for #Socks4Docs to get me through the 'snap crackle pop' phase of dance class. Older dancers will know what I mean 🤣🩰. Get your socks on to support good mental health for doctors today 🤗🧦

In a 5 year period, 1 in 4 maxillofacial surgeons, 1 in 4 obstetrician gynecologists, and 1 in 5 plastic surgeons left practice. JUST FIVE YEARS. A huge, unsustainable turnover for a workforce that easily takes a decade or more to train into. We have to do better.

It's #Socks4Docs 🧦 tomorrow.
Worth reflecting on 1 in 10 surgeons leaving practice in an 8 year period. Worse- experienced surgeons (10-14 years in practice) had double the risk of early career surgeons. And it was *not* associated with gender.

Don't forget to pick up your socks at the @RACSurgeons stand at #RACS26! They run out every year, and they're for such a good cause. 🤗🧦 #Socks4Docs

Sometimes, all that one needs is for someone else to listen and be supportive. Such talking can be cathartic by itself. #Socs4Docs #wellbeing
#Socks4Docs today! Let’s break the stigma surrounding mental health issues among doctors and healthcare staff in general.

@DrDFitzgerald Geoff is a good man who puts a huge amount of work into #Socks4Docs every year. But words matter, and we should change if a term becomes stigmatising- the same way we no longer talk of 'lunatics' or 'hysteria'. Especially when it also perpetuates bias-

@maffygirl @rahttled_doc @crazysocks4Docs I agree fully. For too long those sorts of issues were swept under the carpet. “Toughen Up!” for example. To bring about meaningful change one has to start somewhere. In anaesthesia there has been a huge emphasis on wellbeing in recent years and it started from this. #Socks4Docs
#Socks4Docs (Friday June 7) is not just about the socks 🧦, it is about changing the culture around mental health. And as part of that, I personally choose to omit 'crazy' because it is a stigmatising word that is disproportionately levelled at women reporting poor mental health.
At home today but fully support #socks4docs as does my work colleague for the day Hector. Started by @gdtoogood @crazysocks4Docs
In full support of raising awareness of the stigma many of us feel when when we need support for our mental health. It's ok to not be ok.

@maffygirl @rahttled_doc @crazysocks4Docs It raises awareness of mental health issues among doctors and healthcare staff more widely. These conversations have been shared across oceans lately. One thing, let’s go with #Socks4Docs instead. It’s much kinder.
#socks4docs today! 7 June 2024. Let’s all open the conversations around mental health issues among doctors and healthcare staff in general.

@Ahpra I would like to see us continue to raise awareness of doctor mental health through #Socks4Docs but to drop the 'crazy' terminology. It would not be acceptable language for a doctor to use in describing a patient; why should we accept using it for colleagues?
Sunshine, #Socks4Docs and supportive colleagues (I'm the 🍉). Normalising conversations around mental health 🤗🧦

@maffygirl @an_leavy My local work units dropped the 'crazy' from our #Socks4Docs messaging this year (actually last year as well) and it hasn't diminished the strength of the day at all. Women seeking mental health support already get gaslit as 'crazy'. We don't need to perpetuate that as doctors.
