#SolvaSaal (1958) : The Raj Khosla twist to the iconic #ItHappenedOneNight (1934). Khosla was emerging as a notable director in the 50s before turning heads with thrillers in the next decade. #RajKapoor and #Nargis had already copied #FrankCapra's classic with #ChoriChori (1956), and just two years later, Khosla made his own version of that cult rom-com with Solva Saal, while making several changes to the original. For similarities, you have a journalist helping an heiress, but here, a necklace is at the centre of the story. It's that typical Raj Khosla element filled with suspense. He even incorporated the climax song into the suspense. I don't know why some people compare it to #RomanHoliday (1953), when there is no heartbreak in the end and that film is largely remembered for its sad ending. Capra couldn't do that because, in the 30s, nobody would have appreciated an intellectual and sad ending. Then, the 40s made such endings popular with Casablanca (1942), and it eventually became an iconic cliché. Solva Saal does try to go in that direction for a while but soon comes back home. After all, it was an Indian rom-com; the ending had to showcase that "All is well." We even have the Walls of Jericho sequence copied here. The love story blooms nicely, and the songs are too good. "Hai Apna Dil To Awara" is an evergreen number, while "Yahi To Hai Wo" is another enchanting song. Dev Anand looks damn handsome throughout the film. "Shakal surat to acchi hai aapki, gaana sunke aapko hero na bana de ye log," says Waheeda Rehman to him, and he replies, "Jee, hero banne ka koi irada to nahin mera." In one scene, Waheeda's character asks Dev Anand's character, "Jee, laaj nahi aati aapko?" and he replies, "Ye Laaj hi to aa jaye jeevan mein, to kya maza aaye!" What a fantastic dialogue. Waheeda Rehman looks breathtaking without any effort, and her expressions are on point. Raj Khosla may have borrowed from the Hollywood classic, but he made sure that Solva Saal had more of its own soul than copied material. Overall, a fun watch by late-50s standards. RATING - 6/10* #RajKhosla #DevAnand #WaheedaRehman

है अपना दिल तो आवारा ना जाने किस पे आयेगा Was not aware till recently that there is also a sad version of this song. Trivia: Pancham played the harmonica in the happy version. Check out both the versions. #HemantKumar #SDBurman #Majrooh #SolvaSaal @7_rang_ke_sapne @gaanepurane

On #WorldPublicTransportDay today, two stanzas from two immortal songs filmed on a #Train. Both feature #Waheeda & #DevAnand in two different films (#SolvaSaal & #KalaBazar) sharing the genius of #SDBurman ~ #HemantKumar #MohdRafi #Majrooh #Shailendra #SolvaSaal (1958) #RajKhosla #KalaBazar (1960) #VijayAnand

Hindi film songs sung by #FaceOfTheWeek #HemantaMukherjee featuring #DevAnand on-screen became very popular. Some of those well-known gems are “Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni” (#Jaal), “Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum (#Patita), etc. Revisit "Hai Apna Dil To Awara” from #SolvaSaal.
