The Jutes are too often overlooked when the story of early Anglo-Saxon England is told 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Most people know of the Angles and Saxons, yet there was a third Germanic people who crossed the North Sea in the centuries following the collapse of Roman rule in Britain. The Jutes. Originating from the Jutland peninsula in what is now Denmark, the Jutes were a people of warriors, seafarers, and settlers. Like their fellow North Sea tribes, their society was built upon blood, kinship, loyalty, and allegiance to powerful war leaders. Blood, kin, and soil were central to their identity, binding families and communities through shared ancestry, tradition, and the land they settled. During the 5th century, they crossed the North Sea and established themselves chiefly in Kent, the Isle of Wight, and parts of southern Hampshire. The early English historian Bede named them alongside the Angles and Saxons as the three peoples who helped establish the foundations of England. Their greatest stronghold was the Kingdom of Kent, one of the earliest established Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. Its royal dynasty traced its ancestry to the legendary Hengest and Horsa, the famed Germanic leaders associated with the first waves of settlement in Britain. Kent would later become the first Anglo-Saxon kingdom to embrace Christianity, following the arrival of Augustine of Canterbury in AD 597 and the conversion of King Æthelberht. The Jutes were no insignificant footnote in English history. They were among the founding peoples of Anglo-Saxon England, warriors and settlers whose legacy became part of the very foundations of the English nation. Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.
