Happening right now... Visiting Univ of Tokyo student @Anomro Hirochika Ueda performs his first #spiceCT procedure, targeting the pelvic region of this great horned owl (a natural casualty donated to our research). Thanks @hyaenaDon Cerio for your able mentorship.

If you're a plunge-diving northern gannet, hitting the water at >40 mph like a dart, you better have a skull that can handle it! This gannet is one of our recent #OA uploads to @MorphoSource (https://t.co/kXeH6Hs33F), with #OUµCT scan data & STLs. #spiceCT data coming soon!

Our latest #OA upload to @MorphoSource is a loon: https://t.co/tmunSMAXQP! Scanned the body in a swimming pose at @OhioHealth O'Bleness Hosp. & just the head on the #OUµCT. More coming with #spiceCT & #diceCT. Thx @OhioU senior @jkrech2230 for uploading & @NSF_BIO for funding.

We always do a "prescan" on the #OUµCT prior to #diceCT, #spiceCT, or barium-based vascular contrast injection so that we can register the nice skull from the prescan. Sometimes we find surprises, like this shot in the neck of a northern harrier! Yes this is a federal offense. :(

Happening right now... Setting up the #OUµCT scan of the juvenile magnificent frigatebird head (OUVC 11506). This is a "prescan," with the "pre-" referring to an initial scan of the specimen prior to any further treatment, which in this case will be a #spiceCT iodine injection.

#TomographyTuesday One benefit of doing #spiceCT with unfixed material is that you can then skeletonize the specimen, as with this great blue heron (OUVC 10848). We're usually after the bony correlates of the soft tissues, so having a nice skull from the exact same guy is key.

There's been lots of interest in #spiceCT, a method to increase soft-tissue contrast in μCT that we've been developing, inspired by our success with @diceCT. A full article just isn't a priority for us now, so we uploaded our #SICB2018 poster to figshare: https://t.co/fTD4RVDRsX

A Random Act of Anatomy from today: @janussif & @hyaenaDon doing a #spiceCT iodine injection into the head of a young alligator that had been euthanized some years ago. We'll run it through the #OUµCT soon (there's cormorant ahead of it in the scan queue) to see how it came out!

Kinda mesmerizing on a Saturday morning to watch an alligator head spin around slowly in the fluoro while being microCT scanned. This is a “prescan.” We’ll do a #spiceCT injection later today and then rescan it. #OUµCT

Black skimmers! #OUµCT scan of a skimmer prior to doing today's #spiceCT injection, showing the remarkable elongate lower jaw rhamphotheca used for skimming. The injection went well thanks to great team work & Don Cerio's skill. Stay tuned for spiceCT results...!

Follow-up to the #spiceCT albatross. Lack of formalin fixation allowed us to skeletonize it even after perfusion with Lugol's iodine & µCT.

#diceCT improves soft-tissue contrast in µCT, but diffusion takes too long. We perfuse with iodine, yielding same-day results. #spiceCT
