10. Make promises to yourself that you actually keep. Read a new new every month, submit en masse quarterly, write every day, revise every week, meet with your writing group monthly. Your submissions will get better! #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18

6. Believe in your writing! If the same piece keeps getting rejected, either the piece needs revision or your work is too fabulous for the world! Take a break from it to decide which one it is. #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18

5. Genre is a construct that both does and does not exist. If your work fits multiple genres, find presses that embrace hybrid and experimental work (like @SFWP!). Just because it's weird doesn't mean it's not good! #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18

4. Celebrate the rejections! Some writers shoot for 100 rejections/year as motivation to keep writing. See rejection as an opportunity for a better draft or submission elsewhere! Pay attn to personalized rejections -- we don't send them lightly! #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18

3. Know your editors. Most presses have mastheads with "About" sections for the editors and readers. Know who will likely be reading your work so you can submit work they'll likely enjoy. (I'm personally not above following editors on Twitter.) #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18

2. Read where you submit. You want your work to fit with the aesthetic of the press, so read their publications to see where your work might fit. Don't submit fantasy prose to a formal poetry journal or press, for example. #writingtips #spwtips #spweek18
