It's red squirrel awareness week!
Our #Formby reds are forced to live in residential areas due to loss of habitat.
Estimated 35-50 thousand are left on England.
Wildlife Ark Trust continue to work on developing a vaccine against #squirrelpox https://t.co/z5qpJjacxK

SICK TO THE BACK TEETH OF SEEING THESE ANIMALS SUFFERING!
The land manager @GreenSefton_ @seftoncouncil claimed #redsquirrels are showing signs of resistance to #squirrelpox, based not on scientific observations or tests, but on their own observations of humans during COVID!
Squirrelpox killing red squirrels. Yet again. Relentless. Recent outbreaks near Newcastle, Formby and in Bridge of Allan as the virus spreads north in Scotland. If it gets onto Anglesey it will be a monumental tragedy.
We need a squirrelpox vaccine. @huw4ogmore

It's Red Squirrel Awareness Day, which is great, but every day should be Red Squirrel Awareness Day.
This species is at risk of extinction in the British Isles. If it wasn't for local volunteer conservation groups across the country they would have been lost by now.
#squirrelpox

A #redsquirrel that was euthanised today to save further suffering.
Look into its eye, these animals are intelligent, sentient, and deserve better.
We can't wait 10 years for a fertility drug, we need other options to be considered urgently @squirrelaccord
#squirrelpox #vaccine

It has been 2 weeks since we last saw a grey squirrel in the garden, and have been monitoring the #redsquirrels every day for symptoms of #squirrelpox
So far so good, but we know we must remain vigilant.
Do we need a #vaccine feasibility study? Who will do it?

7 months ago we lost the colony of #redsquirrel to #squirrelpox We have a pair of juveniles now visiting the garden. They are at serious risk of losing their lives to squirrelpox. With 'key players' dis-interested in even considering a #vaccine what can be done?..more in comments

We are extremely lucky to have a few spots along the @SettleCarlisle line where #redsquirrels can still be seen. Time is running out, we need a #squirrelpox vaccine now.
This is the impact north American grey squirrel has on native red squirrels in UK. Almost obliterated from Wales. Wiped out in most of England. #worldenvironmentday

Today I spotted this #RedSquirrel in Formby, they are recolonising but need help to survive #squirrelpox
With fertility control of Greys so far away. It must be time now for 'major players' to look at a vaccine option
#squirrelpox #vaccine #thelastred @NTFormby

The last few days we have had 4 juvenile #redsquirrel visit the garden, some as early as 5am, indicating they are resident very close.
Since losing the colony to #squirrelpox in Nov, a huge indication that they are recolonising again, but they need help to survive #vaccine

If you go down to @NTFormby woods you will see new information boards with Red Squirrel information, and importantly a QR code that can be scanned to report #redsquirrel and #greysquirrel sightings

Disease that kills Britain's native red squirrel moves north #SquirrelPox🐿️⚠️ https://t.co/XDY1diU6ok
@Welshsquirrels @huw4ogmore In september 2023, @SeneddWales
debated on a #squirrelpox #vaccine and it was decided UKSA will work with the #Wales Squirrel Forum to assess the feasibility.
When I asked @squirrelaccord for a progress update last week, they said to ask the Welsh Parliament. 7 months lost!!
And still #squirrelpox continues to infect and kill #redsquirrels across the country.
Are the main players in Red Squirrel conservation doing enough?
@rsquirrelstrust @SquirrelAccord Is there a #vaccine update?

🚨🚨URGENT!🚨🚨If you live in St John’s in the Vale or Threlkeld #lakedistrict PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED! A couple of our precious red squirrels have been reported with the dreaded pox the non-native invasive grey squirrels carry and spread!!!💔😢 Report to @RedSquirrelsNE or Keswick Red Squirrel Group! 🙏
This pic is from today! 😢💔🐿️
Rangers and volunteers are working flat out to seek the greys and the badly reds to prevent an outbreak as I type this post 😢
✅ Please remove and disinfect your red scamp feeders
✅ Please remove and disinfect your bird feeders
This will help prevent the two species from mingling with each other and stop the badly reds desperate for food slowly dying and spreading it to other reds irrespective of greys.
Right now is MATING SEASON for red cuties and the last thing we need is for a population of endangered species to be wiped out! 😢🐿️

Red squirrel pox blow.
Invasive greys infect Cumbria cluster.
It’s feared parts of one of the few remaining populations of red squirrels on the UK.

And still it continues, squirrel pox killing colonies of Red Squirrels across the country.
When are the the @rsquirrelstrust stakeholders going to actually do something.

💔UPDATE💔🐿️ It’s with great sadness to reveal that the healthy population of red squirrels at Rutter Falls near Appleby have been wiped out by the pox greys carry and spread 😭😢 I was informed this afternoon #nature #redsquirrel I’m devastated for Jim who lives there and needless to say the reds.
If you want to learn more about why etc then look here: https://t.co/qNJbyG3hOT
I’m honestly gutted. I’d see reds often at Rutter Falls. Visitors and locals loved seeing them! 🐿️🐿️😢
Forgive me if I don’t reply much. I’m genuinely upset. I got to know the reds at beautiful Rutter Falls and the place features in my film ‘Cumbrian Red’.
I can’t believe how quickly the reds have been wiped out. I’m gutted but bloody angry too that more isn’t done to inform the wider public by big charities, local authorities and government about a legally protected, iconic and national favourite species! 💔😢🐿️
When will folk realise far and wide such invasive species can be devastating to our habitats and ecosystems??? 🤬🤬
