We've spent most of our #stackstour in the #OldStacks, so here's a glimpse of the #NewStacks. The @CollegeofPhys built an addition in the #1950's to accommodate the expanding collection. This lift helps #librarians move #library materials efficiently between all 7 floors.

Darryl 'Cornbread' McCray started tagging walls with his moniker in his Philly neighborhood in the 1960's, originating the #hiphop & #streetart scene. This #stacksgraffiti clearly isn't a true Cornbread original, but it speaks to Darryl McCray's cultural influence. #stackstour

We mentioned earlier how there seems to be a 'presence' in the #stacks. Maybe it's all these #stacksgraffiti portraits that make it feel like the stacks have eyes. But it's probably the #stacksghost, judging by that self-portrait they left. #stackstour

When the @CollegeofPhys built the stacks, lighting all 7 floors was an important issue. Glass flooring was chosen to help #light flow between levels from the windows & light fixtures. Only one glass slab has been replaced, a testament to their durability. #stackstour

We've made it to the #stacks portion of our #stackstour. The Snead & Company Iron Works installed these shelving units when the current @CollegeofPhys building was built in 1909. They're made of #castiron coated with #enamel & stretch through all 7 floors of the stacks space.

Contrary to what you see on #Etsy, these aren't filled with wine bottles or sewing notions. The Library used to keep track of its #collections with #cardcatalogs organized by title, author, or subject. We still reference our #catalogcards for their handwritten notes. #stackstour

Visitors are often surprised that we have a #fireplace. George William Childs gifted it to the @CollegeofPhys in 1888 when it was located at 13th&Locust. It ended up in the Library when the College moved to its current location. And no, it is not functional. #nosmores #stackstour
