#StuartMason will explain how the Long Man of Wilmington, the iconic Sussex hill figure, can be understood as a monumental celestial timekeeper set within a carefully oriented ancient landscape. Through archaeoastronomical analysis, the Long Man reveals key turning points in the solar and lunar year, marking auspicious seasonal thresholds including solstices and major lunar cycles.
When viewed within its wider landscape context, the figure emerges not as an isolated geoglyph, but as part of a sophisticated cosmological design. Reconsidered in this light, the Long Man may stand as Britain’s eastern counterpart to Stonehenge, a monumental expression of sacred time encoded into the land itself. Stuart Mason is a researcher, folklorist, author, and ancient landscape guide with over 30 years of experience studying archaeoastronomy and ancient cosmologies worldwide.
His work focuses on lunar cycles, solstices, and long-term celestial patterns. He has lived on remote islands in the Pacific, where he learnt the indigenous systems of navigational astronomy. His focus now is on exploring how prehistoric monuments encode astronomical knowledge within mythic and ritual landscapes.
Through field research, writing, and guided exploration, Stuart investigates the enduring relationship between land, sky, and sacred time. He spoke at Megalithomania in 2007, founded The Antiquarian Society in the same year, organised the Out of the Ordinary Festival in Sussex for many summers and his new book on the Long Man of Wilmington is being launched at #Megalithomania 2026.
