Hundreds of Armenians were murdered in the Sumgait massacres of 1988. These were orchestrated acts of violence that escalated and eventually resulted in the tragic depopulation of Armenians from Artsakh in 2023.   Forgetting the victims of these crimes allows them to be repeated. As Azerbaijan continues to hold Armenians captive in Baku, I'm calling upon the Aliyev regime to cease its hostile, anti-Armenian rhetoric and actions.

The factions of the National Assembly of the Republic of Artsakh have issued a joint statement marking the anniversary of the Sumgait pogroms and the Day of Remembrance for the victims of massacres organized by Azerbaijan. The statement recalls the mass killings and forced displacement of Armenians in Sumgait in 1988, followed by violence in Kirovabad, Baku, Maragha, and the complete displacement of Armenians from Azerbaijan. It stresses that impunity for these crimes led to further aggression against Artsakh, including war crimes, blockade, and the forced displacement of Artsakh’s Armenian population in 2023. The factions condemn violence based on national identity, call for international legal and political accountability, and reaffirm their commitment to defending the rights of the people of Artsakh, including a safe and dignified return and the realization of the right to self-determination.
