Data from last month shows that the U.S. has emerged as India’s largest source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). However, American energy — once freight costs are included — is more expensive than supplies from elsewhere, underscoring how such imports are driven more by political signaling than by economic logic. In a way, history is repeating itself. Pressure from the first Trump presidency drove India’s oil imports from Iran to zero, despite Tehran’s longstanding discounts. That shift helped turn the U.S. into a significant supplier of crude and petroleum products to India, a trend that held until Russia began offering discounted barrels following the outbreak of the Ukraine war. Today, India’s energy imports — among the hardest hit by the fallout from Trump’s Iran war — are increasingly being shaped by the selective granting or rejection of sanctions waivers.
