The great Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore, was once penning a verse while traveling in a boat. It was late evening, and there was a small lamp by which he was trying to write.
However, inspiration eluded him.
He then told the boatman to turn off the lamp.
Immersed in the dark, he opened himself to the surrounding environment--the pale moonlight, the undulating sounds of the river, the distant chirp of birds--and lo and behold, words began to flow through him.
The lamp was, in a sense, the distraction.
We are all captive to modern-day lamps: glowing screens, which inundate us, from the time we wake up. They capture our attention and perception, keeping these very much within a rectangular box.
But to truly be inspired, it is perhaps necessary to switch off these things, plunge into the real world, and let our senses frolic in that unfettered and unclicked-through stimulation.
Data sabbaticals--periods where we switch off our devices--are very much becoming the need of the times. Just like devices need recharging, our mind and senses do too.
It might be ironic you read this on a device, but then, where else can such a point be best made?
Switch off some, to switch on a lot more.
