Good evening folks.
I wrote this piece this morning from the gut. A pure expression of feeling. From me. For me.
Why? For a tree Iโd never met before?
Iโm not sure.
We work for #bees and #nature full time here. We see first hand the wanton destruction all around us. It hurts.
At the highest point of the sanctuary on our boundary with an adjoining landowner stands proud a mature sycamore tree. At the most exposed point of our otherwise sheltered farm. A lesson in resilience. Orneriness.
One of my favourite trees of the many we have here.
When we hear the chainsaws roar (as almost daily they do) in that direction we sprint from what we are doing prepared for the worst and the fight. We are on constant alert.
Not to fail these trees.
To lose any of the trees we live among to the wind, to disease, to the inevitability of age saddens but is natural. But to lose one to the chainsaws, to ignorance. No. Not on our watch.
So the unnatural loss of this tree brought to the surface the years of caring, watching, worrying and despair here all these hundreds of miles and a sea away.
I did not expect the reaction it has received from you. Iโm not sure how to react back. It is a piece I wish I had not felt the need to write.
When I post on bees I look for the likes and retweets - not for ego - but to spread the message as far and wide as possible.
But this was personal. A shout into the abyss not expecting any echo.
But the echo came.
So thank you.
To each and every person who reacted, reposted and shared emotion back.
For the echo.

The Sycamore is looking really good.
You can see some edge effect which is unavoidable, however the way they were laid out actually minimises any difference in edge effect between each seed lot.
