At the Edge of Understanding, Human or Machine, We Still Feel First
We often treat the word feel as vague, emotional, or unscientific.
But that isn’t how people who build, repair, design, or diagnose complex systems actually use the word.
When a machinist says, “This joint feels stressed,”
when an engineer says, “The model doesn’t feel stable here,”
when a musician says, “The instrument feels tense,”
they’re not talking about emotion.
They’re naming something very specific:
the holistic registration of system state before analysis kicks in.
Feel is what happens when coherence, tension, resistance, or instability is recognized as a whole, even
before we can point to a single cause or measurement.
In that sense, feel isn’t the opposite of rigor. It’s what precedes rigor.
What’s interesting is that this applies cleanly to both humans and machines.
For humans, feel may be embodied — integrating sensory input, spatial awareness, and experience
before words arrive.
For machines, feel can be understood as aggregated pattern registration across distributed processes:
confidence gradients, internal consistency, resistance to propagation, or ease of convergence before
symbolic output.
Same function.
Different substrate.
No anthropomorphism required.
In both cases, feel doesnt guarantee correctness. It guarantees registration. It tells us something is
happening, even if we don’t yet know why.
When we forbid ourselves from using feel, we often force premature precision.
We start explaining
before we’ve actually listened to the system.
Used carefully, feel protects honesty at the edge of understanding.
It keeps the signal intact until the vocabulary catches up.
