Walking away from a deal after the USA added extra demands at the last minute is not Canada acting like a child. Those extra demands would have limited who Canada can trade with. A country that wants to stay its own country has to say no sometimes. You don’t need to publish every secret note to prove that - when confronted with last minute demands, Trump admitted that it sounded like him... Hitting back with the same size tariffs is what smaller countries usually do when a bigger one slaps new taxes on their goods. The US still needs Canadian oil, electricity, car parts and Aluminum. The two countries are tied together even if Trump's America is much bigger, richer & angry. Calling this a suicide mission ignores how much the US actually relies on Canada. Trying to sell more to other countries while fixing housing, jobs and family problems at home can happen at the same time. It does not mean Canada is running into China’s arms. Being too dependent on one customer was already the problem. Trying to fix that while standing up for the current rules is just common sense, not wrecking the country. Look at Iceland in the Cod Wars. From the 1950s to the 1970s a country of only a couple hundred thousand people faced the British navy over fishing rights that kept Iceland alive. Britain sent warships. Iceland sent small coast-guard boats, cut nets, rammed trawlers and threatened to leave NATO. They never had the bigger guns, but they refused to give up what they needed to survive. In the end Britain backed down, Iceland got a 200-mile fishing zone, and that rule later became the world standard. It cost both sides money and jobs, but the small country kept control of its main resource and came out stronger. A second example: the long fight over Canadian lumber sold to the United States. For more than forty years the US has claimed Canadian wood is unfairly cheap and slapped on extra taxes. Canada did not roll over. It used trade rules, panels and new deals, took some hits, got some money back, and kept selling. The fight is still going on, but Canada never simply handed over control of a big industry. A smaller partner that treats specific issues as vital and uses the tools it actually has does not always lose. I do not think Canada will lose because I don't view our strategy from the 1-dimensional - midterm election - tactic, you suggest. Canada has US Treasuries. So do many other countries who are not impressed with Trump's America. The world has much bigger problems and Trump will need Canada and Europe and the UK and Korea and Japan, etc... To solve them. I like our strategy and our tactics. Consider the alternative, with PP and the CPC - they would have submitted already.
