Spotify's announcement on AI yesterday shows they are completely unserious about clamping down on AI music. The most important thing to understand is what it allows: It allows fully AI-generated music to continue being uploaded, and recommended to users, with no clear label attached. So what does it actually say? Three things, each of which is important to understand in context. 1. Protecting against impersonation of artists. But this is table-stakes, and will likely soon be illegal anyway. Spotify shouldn't be applauded for not allowing people to make fake versions of real artists. It's fraud, and stopping this is the bare minimum platforms should be doing. 2. Protection against 'spam'. But this is about mass uploads, short tracks, etc. They already have a spam filter - they're just updating it. They don't define AI music as spam. 3. Voluntary disclosure of AI usage in track credits. But this is voluntary (so most people won't disclose using AI), and even when people *do* disclose AI usage, it will be buried in the track credits, which no one reads. The announcement was presented as being musician-friendly, but this is pure comms-speak. In reality it just paves the way for more AI music on Spotify. Use Deezer instead.
