Each year, #TeMaevaNui celebrations marking the anniversary of the #CookIslands’ self-governance bring together Cook Islanders from across the region as well as guests from around the world.
In March, #Poland and the Cook Islands took the historic step of establishing diplomatic relations and I was honoured to represent the Polish Government at this year’s 60th Anniversary of Self-Governance Celebration, which was such a vivid expression of unity, cultural pride and shared identity!
It was an hour to meet Prime Minister @MarkBrownPM and Foreign Minister Tingika Elikana during the celebrations.
My visit also provided an opportunity to bring a small taste of #Poland’s rich heritage to #Rarotonga. In the presence of the Cook Islands' High Commissioner to New Zealand HE Kairangi Samuela, I presented the Cook Islands National Library – Te Runanga Puka with a collection of books by prominent Polish writers and poets, including Nobel Prize laurates Wisława #Szymborska and Olga #Tokarczuk, but also Zbigniew #Herbert, Julian #Tuwim and Andrzej #Sapkowski, books on Polish #history by authors such as Adam #Zamoyski, @claremulley and @jackfairweather, stories of remarkable Poles and #OutstandingPolishWomen, children’s books and more.
When presenting the books, I told Ms Odile Urirau, Chief Librarian, that we are committed to bringing the two countries closer together and that the gifted books are only just a symbolic first step in that direction. So, whether you are a #Witcher fan or want to dive into some truly great Polish literary works, learn more about Poland’s history, read the story of Mr Miniscule’s encounter with the whale, or try some Polish recipes, make sure to drop by the Cook Islands National Library – Te Rununga Puka if you are on Rarotonga and check out their new collection of #booksfromPoland!
While on Rarotonga, my colleagues from #TeamEurope and I had very good and substantive meetings with Foreign Affairs Secretary @TepaeruHerrmann @CKI_MFAI, Transport Secretary John Hosking, Tony Manarangi, Executive Director of @mci_registry, as well as with Beverly Stacey, Corporate Services Director and Dr. John Parianos, Knowledge Management Director at the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority. We look forward to further strengthening these partnerships!
Last but not least, it was a pleasure to meet Christopher Earle Vaile, local businessman and owner of #PałacKorbielowice in southern Poland, and to learn about his strong links with our country, his impressively numerous undertakings and plans for the future.
#Poland is committed to exploring new areas of cooperation with the #CookIslands, including in green transformation, digitalisation, blue economy, agriculture, education and regional security.
Thank you for the warm welcome, #CookIslands!

Te Maeva Nui is a week of cultural celebrations in the Cook Islands, leading to Constitution Day on August 4, marking independence in 1965. With arts, crafts, music, and food, the highlight is the epic dance competitions at the National Auditorium. #TeMaevaNui
